"An improvement over the tedious "Saw II"...shifts the focus to the relationships among the characters."  Maitland McDonagh, TV Guide
"...a more affecting study in grief, guilt and human frailty than "Babel.""  Scott Foundas, L.A. Weekly

Saw III - DVD

The Saw series, like most horror franchises, uses a lot of constants in its formula -- even when those constants don't seem particularly vital to the quality of the series. Saw III, for example, matches its predecessors in the dubious categories of histrionic yelling, equally histrionic smash-editing (often incorporating a generous helping of re-used footage, from the previous films or even from earlier in this one), and plot twists that depend on those histrionics to drown out implausibility....read the full review

Coming in yearly intervals, the Saw franchise has built its reputation on the two things it does extraordinarily well -- shocking twist endings and a keen sense for how much brutality audiences can stand. This third and possibly final entry in the series stands up to its predecessors in both categories, though maybe not in the follow through....read the full review
Saw III - Unrated Edition - DVD Review
By: Brian Holcomb - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews

For all its nervous noise and mechanical tension,Saw III isn't very scary, just annoying. Their popularity aside, these are hard films to enjoy. They are designed to fill the viewer up with the most primal tension of bodily dismemberment and then leave them hanging without catharsis. This is why the theme of Saw III is utter nonsense. Forgiveness' Maybe in real life we could learn a thing or two about the emptiness of revenge but in this loud, screeching video game meat grinder, everything is reduced to the lizard brain. KILL! CUT! SMASH! SURVIVE! DESTROY! ...read the full review

Sight and Sound
"[R]icket, intricate and ruthless. SAW III takes the time to include flashbacks which answer plot questions raised in the earlier movies." 01/01/2007 p.76

Ultimate DVD
3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his third entry in the horror franchise is gruesomely good stuff....With some decent twists and turns..." 03/01/2007 p.105

Los Angeles Times 6 of 10
Horror sequels tend to be exercises in creative sadism: same abattoir, different Roman numeral. Giving a pound of flesh where it's due, the "Saw" franchise doesn't just look for new settings on the grinder but also aspires to hack out a meaty story arc. "Saw III," however, winds up with the rest of the gristle...Bottom line, those in the "Saw" factory know their audience and have brought along the appropriate buckets and bibs. Even devotees, however, may note pacing problems and tire of Jigsaw's selective omnipotence (he can acquire copious amounts of deadly nerve agent but not a bottle of Ativan?). Those who see "Saw III" are in for ups and downs. - Michael Ordona

Variety 8 of 10
Unlike the disturbingly mysterious original, "Saw III" is a neatly wrapped-up package that explains everything -- including Jigsaw's evil contraptions and the background of his crazed female assistant...With the superb, gravelly-voiced Bell now mostly confined to a bed, more of the load is on Smith, who is not as effective in the nasty department. MacFadyen delivers a strong, almost silent performance that conveys a pained father's dark night of the soul, while Soomekh (the distressed Iranian daughter in "Crash") is reasonably convincing as the surgeon...Dark, ghoulish look of "III" is identical to "II" thanks to production designer David Hackl (who also handled latter) and lenser David A. Armstrong (who has been with "Saw" since the beginning). - Robert Koehler
