Sara's life is devoted to dance - she wants nothing more than to make it into New York's famous Juilliard School. But when tragedy strikes and she loses her mom, her hopes are dashed and she buries her dreams of ever attending the country's best dance school.

Without her Mom to support her, Sara moves to the tough streets of Chicago's South side to live with her Dad - a down on his luck jazz musician who she barely knows. Her new school's a totally different world from the small town she grew up in, but Sara's quick comebacks and sassy attitude earn her the quick respect and friendship of straight-talking Chenille. But it's Chenille's brother, Derek, the cool and good-looking star of the school, who grabs Sara's attention. He plays it up tough, but he also has the smarts and a plan to go to medical school.

    Notes & Personnel Info
The soundtrack to the MTV flick Save the Last Dance features a wide array of music capturing the various settings of the film, which stars Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas in a conflict of black and white America. Artists contributing tracks to the movie include Lucy Pearl, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Q-Tip, and K-Ci & JoJo. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
The film SAVE THE LAST DANCE features Julia Stiles as a young girl with dreams of dancing school and a love of ballet. When she meets a young man from the other side of the tracks, she discovers hip-hop and an entirely different style of dance. The freshness she feels in that sense of discovery is evoked by the cuts on the film's soundtrack, which sparkle with a cross-cultural appeal that mixes rap, R&B, and pop. The film's theme song is a perfect example of this cross-pollenization, as we hear interpolations of the chorus from Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" set against an R&B track full of hip-hop beats. Rappers Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and Mack 10 (among others) help to add street credibility to the album, but there's no lack of melodic pop appeal either.

    Producer: Mitchell Leib; Michael McQuarn
