| Author Bio| Jonathan Kozol | | The son of a social worker and a neuropsychiatrist, Jonathan Kozol was educated at Harvard and, as a Rhodes Scholar, at Magdalen College, Oxford. After his studies at Oxford, Kozol lived in Paris, in the same hotel as William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, and wrote a novel. He returned to the U.S. in 1963, and the following year became a teacher in the Boston public school system. After being fired for "curriculum deviation", Kozol worked in one of Boston's wealthy suburbs. His experiences as a teacher have proven to be the wellspring for virtually all of Kozol's books, starting with "Death at an Early Age", which won a 1968 National Book Award and which made him famous. He has reported for many years on social issues such as homelessness and the neglect of poor children in the nation's schools as well as in society at large, and his books have won numerous awards and stimulated much debate. |
