4 of 5 Nice Auto Setting Alarm Clock Tuesday, May 15, 2007

All you do is set the time zone on the bottom and it does the rest. You plug it in and in about 15 minutes it has set itself to the atomic clock. Wish it had a battery backup though. My wife kept unplugging it because she couldn't figure out how to turn the alarm off when I wasn't there. Then it lost the alarm settings. The controls aren't totally intuitive, you have to read the instructions. The instructions aren't great but they are adequate. There is some confusion over which button is which when you read the instructions. The gradually louder beeping of the alarm is nice. You can turn it off before it wakes the kids. Bought this radio for 2 specific features:
(1) Dual alarm. We use both the radio and the alarm. The sound quality is very good, so the radio can come on softly, and still be heard. The alarm's Humane Waking System, which starts off quietly and increases in volume, is well named. And the radio station you'll wake to is the one you select when you're setting the alarm, so it's unaffected by what you listen to at other times of the day.
(2) Atomic clock time setting. Solves the problem of rare power outages, by resetting the clock automatically via radio-transmitted time. Daylight savings time also adjusted automatically, just in case we forget.
Other nice features include: 7 buttons you can set to radio stations (so 7 each in AM and FM), a Nap button you can use to set a quick alarm to wake you in a little while (each press of the button adds 10 minutes to your nap).
The manual could be better written, but it's accurate. As the options available during set up require multiple step, it's important to follow the manual carefully.
The display can be lit or unlit: there's no half-lit setting for night-time. We find the orange isn't too bright for sleeping (I feared it would be), but the numbers, being thin, do take us a moment to focus on, and the screen is busy, showing alarm settings, day and date, etc. I'd prefer to have a setting where all but the clock data could be made to disappear.
All in all, it gets the job done. Was this review helpful?
