In this thrilling third hardcover release, USA Today and New York Times Extended bestselling author James Rollins delivers another great edge-of-your seat read as he takes us to the outer reaches of the vast, arid deserts of the Arabian peninsula to uncover a scientific mystery that has been lost beneath the sands for decades but threatens the world as we know it.

Annotation:
This sixth action-packed thriller by James Rollins is set deep in the Arabian desert, where various parties race to be the first to a lost city and the secrets it holds. A bizarre explosion destroys a rare and valuable collection of Mideastern antiquities at the British Museum. Lady Kara Kensington, whose family donated the collection, is determined to find out the cause of the accident. Clues lead her and her companions--the collection's curator, a daredevil archaeologist, and a U.S. secret operative--to the semi-mythical city of Ubar. Once there, they will find an ancient energy source and its fiercely protective guardians, a combination that poses a threat to the entire world.

London, England

Harry Masterson would be dead in thirteen minutes.

If he had known this, he would've smoked his last cigarette down to the filter. Instead he stamped out the fag after only three drags and waved the cloud from around his face. If he was caught smoking outside the guards' break room, he would be shit-canned by that bastard Fleming, head of museum security. Harry was already on probation for coming in two hours late for his shift last week.

Harry swore under his breath and pocketed the stubbed cigarette. He'd finish it at his next break ... that is, if they got a break this night.

Thunder echoed through the masonry walls. The winter storm had struck just after midnight, opening with a riotous volley of hail, followed by a deluge that threatened to wash London into the Thames. Lightning danced

5 of 5 Best Rollins yet! Wednesday, July 07, 2004
Colby from California

I have always enjoyed James Rollins books as kind of a guilty pleasure, there was always plenty of action wrapped around a good scientific plot (science stretched by a large imagination), but the stories always did lack in the character development department. Not that I expect much from books of this genre but it is still nice to have some character development. In this book Rollins has done a much better job with his characterizations and dialog. His hard core fans probably won't care either way, but it may help attract new fans. in fact if you are new to rollins I recomend you start with this book! I did just finish an interesting thriller: "A TOURIST IN THE YUCATAN" that scored well on my believabilty scale!
