Vacationing with their respective families at a resort in the early 1950s, a happily married California housewife and a New Jersey accountant in their mid-20s find the attraction between themselves irresistible and end up spending the night together. Realizing that they cannot leave their respective spouses, they resolve to meet at the resort at five-year intervals to commemorate their amorous evening. Thus begins a tradition lasting for over two decades, encompassing their personal triumphs and tragedies, victories and insecurities, as the two transition from young to middle-aged, sharing their innermost hopes and fears. Adapted by Bernard Slade from his long-running Broadway hit, Same Time, Next Year features stellar performances by Ellen Burstyn and Alan Alda as the star-crossed couple who support each other and share the comedic and dramatic moments that life brings their way.

Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn glow on screen as two people who find long, enduring love with each other despite being married to other people. A fateful meeting at a California inn leads the seemingly mismatched pair into 26-year-long affair in which they meet for only one weekend every year.
