| | | Love. Expulsion. Revolution. Features: DVD, Dolby Digital (5.1) An offbeat comedy about one quirky student's obsessive pursuit to win over a teacher's heart. Director and co-writer Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket) tells the story of Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a precocious 10th grader whose extracurricular activities make him one of the most outgoing students at Rushmore Academy--and its worst student. But Max's only concern is winning the affection of Miss Cross (Olivia Williams), a first grade teacher at the academy. Going to extraordinary lengths, he hatches a scheme aided by steel tycoon Mr. Blume (Bill Murray). Life for Max at the academy takes an unexpected turn, just as his unrequited love finally produces a decision. "The best comedy of the year." Spin Magazine "Magnificent! The best and most beautiful movie of 1998." New York Daily News
 Editor's Note
Director Wes Anderson's follow-up to the acclaimed BOTTLE ROCKET is a funny, warmhearted, and extremely sharp American response to the English "Angry Young Man" films of the 1960s, right down to its British Invasion soundtrack. Newcomer Jason Schwartzman creates a classic protagonist in Max Fischer, a sophomore at Rushmore Academy. He excels at every extracurricular activity in school, from theater to beekeeping. Gradewise, however, he's failing. He has few friends outside school save for wealthy but depressed industrialist Herman Blume (Bill Murray), father of obnoxious twin boys who also attend Rushmore. Enter Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams), a beautiful young widowed teacher at Rushmore Elementary. While Max is immediately smitten with Miss Cross, she finds comfort in the company of the emotionally frazzled Blume. But Max won't let Blume have Miss Cross without a fight. Anderson and cowriter Owen Wilson have created a script brimming with oddball humor at the surface, but at its core lies just enough realistic pain and disappointment to create an all-too-rare bittersweet edge, striking a subtle balance that few films ever achieve, and finally giving national treasure Bill Murray the chance to shine like never before. As director, Anderson displays his exceptional talents with careful choices in color palette, effective use of slow motion to comedic effect, and, most important, a brilliant selection of offbeat songs that are integral to the story. Easily one of the finest comedies since THE GRADUATE, RUSHMORE is a monument to brilliant filmmaking.
 Plot Summary
A bittersweet comedy more akin to British mod sensibilities and the French New Wave than traditional American teen flicks, Wes Anderson's film is an engaging, compassionate look into the life of 15-year-old Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a poor scholarship student at the posh Rushmore Academy. An extracurricular overachiever with grand schemes, Max believes he can accomplish anything--including winning the love of the beautiful teacher, Miss Cross (the luminous Olivia Williams). Max's dauntless pursuit of her love and the subsequent conflict with his friend and rival Herman Blume (Bill Murray, in a stellar performance) make for a witty and insightful exploration of the joys and frustrations of adolescence.

5 of 5 Perfection. Thursday, November 25, 1999 Conor Dooley from Alpharetta, Ga
Few films can qualify as perfect. Such movies must balance all elements of a film's atmosphere...from the balance of the shots to the music which accompanies them. This film becomes art without ever breaking from it's simple style or attempting to impress it's audience. In short, Rushmore is a film of vivid beauty and an outstanding follow up to the wonderful Bottle Rocket. The director, Wes Anderson, is one of the greatest living directors of our time. 5 of 5 Those who gave this a low score might be idiots. Monday, November 22, 1999 sjdeboth from New York, NY
I saw this movie twice in the theater. It is Bill Murray's career performance. Those who gave this movie a low score obviously cannot recognize a whimsical movie that is beautifully acted, has a simple, elegant plot, and actually shows character development. They might prefer Porky's. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 COMIC GOLD! Monday, November 15, 1999 A Viewer from St. Paul, MN
This offbeat, bittersweet comedy about a boy and his undying affection for a schoolteacher is a modern day masterpiece. Rushmore utilizes a new and exciting movie style that I believe will dominate Hollywood's now stagnant state of affairs for years to come. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A fantastic film! Friday, November 05, 1999 Greg from
Simply the greatest film ever made. You gotta take a look at it! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 If you like this movie you'll like Bottlerocket Monday, October 04, 1999 A Viewer from Seneca Falls, NY
The dialogue is excellent; very witty. If you have the slightest bit of an attention span you'll enjoy this film. If you DID enjoy this film, you'll like Bottlerocket. Rent it, its worth a look. The music, dialogue, and directing is similar...it's another film by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson that even fewer people have seen!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 INCREDIBLE!!!!!!! Friday, September 24, 1999 A Viewer from Philadelphia, PA
'Rushmore' is one of the most brilliant movies ever made. The story contains impossible situations that are treated--by the actors and by the director--as normal. Almost remeniscient of magical realism. This is a must see for intellectuals and movie buffs alike! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Ridiculous? Of course. Waste of Time? Hardly. Sunday, September 12, 1999 Dave1661 from Mt. Prospect, IL
It's funny, and no surprise, how the morons who call this movie 'a waste of time' don't even have the brains to spell 'ridiculous' or 'Bill Murray' correctly. Rushmore is a fabulous comedy, whose humor was not wasted on me, as it was on what seems like many others. Bill Murray gives a terrific, hilarious, Oscar-worthy performance, and Jason Schwartzmann shines in his feature debut. I've been a Wes Anderson fan since Bottle Rocket, and I can't wait for his next movie, if not just so I can hear what some of our nation's morons have to say about it, and also what words they don't know how to spell. 1 of 5 Don't waste your time or money Sunday, September 05, 1999 Kevin from Bay Area
Not a good movie. The plot was rediculous and unreal. I found Jason Schwartzman character to be annoying and I couldn't stand watching him any more. I like Bill Murrey but I think he should not have done this movie. It not worth the money. It isn't even worth renting. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 If You Liked Armegeddon, You Won't Like This Saturday, August 14, 1999 Mark from Albuquerque, NM
This is one of the best examples of character development done right I have encountered in film. On rare occasions while watching a movie, I find myself welling up with anticipation about what turn the story will take and how the characters will react. This was one of those times. 1 of 5 Do Not See This Movie!!! Sunday, August 08, 1999 joe from anytown, va
If you enjoy movies with a dry plot, stiff acting, and and leaves you feeling cheated for wasting your time even watching it- this is the movie for you. This is Bill Murray's worst acting since 'Meatballs'. Jason Schwartzman acting is about as lively as a scarecrow on fire. Please do something else besides see this movie.. go for a walk, play with your dog, stick needle in your eye, just don't watch this movie. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 My new favorite movie Friday, July 16, 1999 gmconfo from Kansas City, MO
Not to over-hype any movie, but this one is great. It works on so many levels. The characters are unique, from the driven, semi-maniacal Max (Jason Schwartzman) to the dry, self deprecating Herman (Bill Murray). These two make an awesome pair! Of course, Olivia Williams is no slouch either. The cinematography is great (check out the slow-mo Max walking out of an elevator dressed as a waiter), the screenplay is hilarious, and the choice of songs for the soundtrack is without a doubt perfect! Too bad all moviemakers don't practice their craft in this manner. This movie created an atmosphere that left quite an impression on me. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Hello. A secret follows: Thursday, July 15, 1999 jason from etobicoke
It's probably the greatest film ever made. So now you know. Of course, many people whom I wouldn't really call close friends, but more 'working acquaintences' now think I'm a big strange-o for such a statement, and, as such, many, many fistfights and much, much drinking has incured. So if you do not wish to become a social leper, please keep the above-stated first sentence to yourself. Have a nice day. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 ON MY TOP TEN LIST! Sunday, July 11, 1999 Bob Rock from Beverly Hills California
This is one of the best movie's that I have ever viewed. I pre-ordered the DVD and got it for 12 bucks (including shipping). The movie was overall one of the greatest comedies that I have ever had the chance to view. If you dont see a movie in your entire life, SEE THIS ONE. Its great, great, great. CHECK IT OUT, FOR YOUR SAKE! Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 ONE OF THE BEST OVERLOOKED MOVIES THIS YEAR Saturday, June 19, 1999 ioveru from USA
RUSHMORE is one of the best movies to come out in a long time. It's subtle humor, great cast and wonderful directing make this an instant favorite.
Jason Schwartzman is a newcomer with alot of promise in his acting career. Bill Murray is just great. One of his best performances which was nominated for a Golden Globe. Olivia Williams (starred in THE POSTMAN) is just dreamy.
The director, Wes Anderson's 1996 debut BOTTLE ROCKET is definitely a winner too. Was this review helpful?
