The RUGRATS came makes a smooth translation to the big screen in this, their first feature film! 3 of 5 Scary but fun Tuesday, June 22, 1999 A Viewer from Union City, CA
After watching this movie halfway with my children, I left to anwer an extended phone call. When I returned, I found my 5 year old shaking and crying. I calmed her down as the movie ended and all turned out OK. I then looked over at my 6 year old who was quiet but then broke out in tears..
My children have seen more mature movies such as Disney's Hunchback and were not frightened despite warnings I heard. They had even once seen a Steven King thriller with no problems.
They later insisted that they enjoyed it and would watch it again, but I wouldn't let young children watch this one alone. I later read a review commenting on the inappropriateness of the G rating due to frightening content. I wish I had read it sooner.
The animation is a few steps up from the TV version, but does not approach big budget full length feature cartoon quality. The plot is a bit cute, but thin. Still, it should appeal to Rugrats fans, and has enough action to keep children interested.
If you buy it, watch it with your children if they are young. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Not bad but not bug's life. Wednesday, April 28, 1999 A Viewer from Nashville, TN
My 3.5 year old son determines whether a children's movie is good or not. He liked Rugrats alright, but the movie lost him a few times. Compared to Bug's Life (A+), if he could give a grade, it would probably have been (B-). To Rugrat's defense, there is some decent adult humor sprinkled in to keep Dad's attention.
