Perhaps the most amazing thing is that no one came up with this idea before. A mix of world and rock music, sometimes from the cutting edge, is something of a no-brainer, one with wide appeal. By and large this is a great success, pulling from all over the globe with some fine artists. There are plenty of glorious surprises, like France's les Boukakes, who display wonderful riffage and rai on their cover "Sidi H'bibi" (a song done superbly by the late Mano Negra), while the electric kora of Ba Cissoko is stunning. A couple of tracks don't work, like Yela, who head suspiciously toward jazz, or Rim Banna's pedestrian "The Grandma with a Limp." Africa is well represented, with the renowned Tinariwen, Konono No. 1, and others. India's Alms for Shanti are a delight, but "Janoska" from the Transylvanians doesn't capture their energy. The prize, however, definitely goes to Albert Kuvezin & Yat-Kha for their overtone singing cover of Iron Butterfly's "In a Gadda da Vida," which is a delight for its outrageousness. All in all, a sizzling compilation. ~ Chris Nickson
