Marisa Monte is one of the best figures of today's Brazilian pop (a category that does not comprise pure samba, choro, can?ao, baiao, and other Brazilian popular musics). While most new bands and interpreters center their work on futile material and focus on easy formulas and clich?s, she is concerned in really adding something to the superb tradition of MPB, which is quite a challenging task. This is her third album, where, with special guests Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Gilberto Gil, Paulinho da Viola, Velha Guarda da Portela, poca de Ouro, Nan  Vasconcelos, Carlinhos Brown, and others, she delivers some of her hits: "Maria de Verdade," "Na Estrada," "Segue o Seco," "Dan?a da Solidao," "De Mais Ningu?m," "Bem Leve," and "Balan?a Pema." One of the best pop albums from the '90s, she makes clear that she is after a new language in which the respect for the rich musical tradition of Brazil is evident. ~ Alvaro Neder

Artist Overview
In the 1990s, a resurgence of smart, tasteful, and artistically adventurous Brazilian pop hearkened to the bossa nova and tropicalia movements that had seduced the world several decades earlier, if not stylistically then in its reach and influence. One of the luminaries of that renaissance was Marisa Montes, whose gorgeous, classically trained vocals and guitar playing gave life to exciting collaborations with Carlinhos Brown (including TRIBALISTAS, the acclaimed 2002 album recorded with Brown and Arnaldo Antunes), Arto Lindsay, and other Brazilian musical stars. Combining samba, soul, reggae, bossa nova, and pure pop, Monte has crafted a unique take on Brazilian music that has resulted in several international hit recordings and a still thriving career.
