| | | The Event That Made Television History. Features: DVD Based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel about his African ancestors, Roots followed several generations in the lives of a slave family. The saga began with Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton), a West African youth captured by slave raiders and shipped to America in the 1700s. The family's saga is depicted up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte's grandson gained emancipation. Roots made its greatest impression on the ratings and widespread popularity it garnered. On average, 130 million - almost half the country at the time - saw all or part of the series. "An experience similar to watching the first men walk on the moon." Father John Banahan, New World "...excellent...Plenty of important history and impressive attention to detail enrich the story..." Kyle Smith, Film Nerd "Extraordinary. More than a drama. We are witnessing an experience." Sander Vanocur, Washington Post

| | Professional Reviews | Entertainment Weekly "[The actors] portrayed agony with subtle strength....ROOTS endures as a reminder of challenges thrown down, and of how many more remain." -- Grade: B 05/25/2007 68FilmCritic.com 8 of 10 When you think of epic mini-series, what comes to mind? Rich Man, Poor Man? Shogun? More likely than not, it's Roots, the based-on-a-true story tale that spooled over 12 hours and six nights...The entire adventure, which gives us glimpses at (by my count) six generations of characters, spans some 100 years. The unfortunate downside is that some of those 100 years are less thrilling than others. Roots starts to bog down on disc three (of its new six-disc DVD collection), when young Kunta (LeVar Burton) is replaced by old Kunta (John Amos). Amos isn't nearly the actor that Burton is, and combined with an hour of "Kunta hangs at home," the series really starts to flag...By and large, the production is thrilling and full of emotion -- and genuinely informative (albeit, like all 1970s miniseries, considerably overwrought) about the history of slavery in America. - Christopher Null Reel.com 8 of 10 Roots was the first mini-series to be aired on consecutive nights rather than a single episode per week, and at a time when there were few black actors in serious prime-time offerings, it featured a virtual Who's Who of African-American actors...Hard as it is to imagine, few Americans thought much about their ancestors prior to Roots, and the show sparked a national interest in genealogy that continues to this day...Louis Gossett Jr. really shines as slave-mentor Fiddler; as does Madge Sinclair as Bell, Kunte Kinte's wife; Ben Vereen as Kunta Kinte's grandson, Chicken George; and Olivia Cole as Mathilda, the slave who marries George. For contemporary viewers, part of the fun of watching the series is recognizing all the familiar faces in unfamiliar roles. - James Plath

5 of 5 A humbleing reaminder Monday, January 26, 2009 Brian Ling from Minnesota
It is a clasic that really makes you think about where the blacks came from and what was taken from them they were not meant to be here,I cant even immagin being black in those times what was done to them is unforgivable,as a Nation weve come a long long way from even just 20 years ago and its getting better all the time, this movie is very sobering, humbiling, and sadly realistic. 5 of 5 Seminal Mini-Series Wednesday, January 14, 2009 Tom from New Hope, MN 55427
Watching this brought back memories of the family gathered around the TV, riveted night after night. Some of the scenes are quite suggestive, however, if you're considering viewing it with younger folks (although I was only 11 at the time when I saw it!) Was this review helpful?

Read this book years ago when first came out. Movie was a good one and the price here was a real bargain. Actually gave it as a gift. The individual said they really enjoyed it. Thought provoking. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Holds Up after 30 years! Thursday, January 08, 2009 A Viewer from Reston, VA
Watching this with my 12 year old daughter. I was worried that it wouldn't seem as good as I remembered, but to the contrary we are both enjoying it very much and it's sparking some good conversations in our house. Highly recommended! Was this review helpful?
