Although completely modern, the album remains true to the passion and tragedy of the original story and lives up to the imagery of the visually striking film. | | Standouts of the eclectic set include Radiohead's brooding "Talk Show Host," Des'ree's poignant, innocent "Kissing You (Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet)" and the dark, trippy desperation of "#1 Crush," by Garbage, which offers as the opening line of the record a mournful, melodramatic "I would die for you, I would die for you." The contrast of sweetness and ferocity mirrors the dramatic range of emotions in the film, in which the fervor of first love is buffeted by the intense hatred between rival families. | | Baz Luhrmann's garish, flamboyant adaptation of Romeo Juliet was hyperkinetic and colorful, boasting a heavy inspiration from the visual style of MTV, so it's only appropriate that the soundtrack was tailored for the alternative nation that MTV fostered. Combining modern rock acts like Garbage, Radiohead, the Cardigans, and the Butthole Surfers with contemporary soul like Des'ree and adult alternative like Gavin Friday, the album is slick, polished, catchy -- and surprisingly strong. Though the soul and pop is good, the alternative rock acts on the soundtrack fare the best, with Garbage and Radiohead both contributing excellent B-sides ("#1 Crush" and "Talk Show Host," respectively), with the Cardigans' sleek, sexy lounge-disco number "Lovefool" stealing the show. [The 10th Anniversary Edition includes five bonus tracks.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | Engineer: Gary Thomas; Jim Abbiss; Mark "Spike" Stent; Andy Todd; Jeremy Wheatley |
