Although the notion of "women in rock" is undoubtedly well-intentioned, it often can be trite or condescending, as if female artists had to be judged at a different level than men. Also, grouping artists as diverse as Etta James, Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian, Kate Bush, Aretha Franklin, PJ Harvey, Dusty Springfield, Sonic Youth, Shawn Colvin, X-Ray Spex, Tina Turner, Tori Amos, the Go-Go's, Nico, Martha Reeves, Sarah McLachlan, Janis Joplin, Eurythmics, Carly Simon, the Pretenders, Pat Benatar, Belly, Jewel, and the Bangles under the same label is ridiculous, simply because only a handful of those artists are musically similar. That, however, is exactly what the three-disc set Rolling Stone: Women in Rock does -- it offers an overview of most artists (including all the above) that could possibly be labeled female. Since it is sequenced in nearly random order -- really, having X-Ray Spex's "Oh Bondage Up Yours" segue into Dionne Warwick's "Walk on By" was not the best idea in the world -- the set winds up reinforcing the belief that gathering artists under the dubious "women in rock" umbrella is misguided, at best. Still, the songs themselves are all very good, and well over three-quarters of the set could be classified as "classics." Nevertheless, even "classics" should be heard in their appropriate context, and this multi-disc box set simply doesn't provide that.
