He's Just Taking Up Space!

Features: DVD

Blast off for outrageously funny space travel in this screwball comedy that spins wildly out of control all the way to Mars! Though he's a wiz with computers, accident-prone astro-nut Fred Randall (comedian Harland Williams, Dumb and Dumber) is the last guy on Earth you'd want on the first manned mission to Mars. But as bad luck and poor timing would have it, that's exactly what happens, and Fred undergoes rigorous, if not hilarious, training at NASA. After that it's t-minus a reality check as Fred blasts off with the rest of the space shuttle crew: a cocky, no-nonsense commander, a sexy mission specialist, and a mischievous space chimp named Ulysses. From the dizzying preflight foolishness to the even loonier landing, RocketMan is the out-of-this-world hit comedy that's more than go for launch...it's go for laughs!

"A slickly produced, reasonably funny family film from the company that does it best."  Chris Grunden, Film Journal International
"I was stunned by how much I laughed at Harland Williams' juvenile antics in this silly little comedy."  Chuck O'Leary, Fantastica Daily
"Screwball! Hilarious!"  Kansas City Star

Editor's Note

The space program suffers a major setback in the form of bungling aeronautics engineer Fred Z. Randall, who, despite his conceptual smarts, can't quite hack it as an astronaut because of his clumsiness. But when the first manned mission to Mars is short a man, Fred springs into action, much to dismay of his chagrined fellow crew members, who endure Fred's interplanetary flatulence and sock puppet plays.

"...ROCKETMAN is hilarious at the beginning and then matures along the way..." 12/01/1997 p.52

Chicago Sun-Times
"...It's a wacky comedy in the Jerry Lewis-Jim Carrey mold....It's the kind of movie that gives you a goofy grin half of the time..." 10/10/1997 p.89

eFilmCritic.com 5 of 10
The only reason that Rocket Man really interested me was the fact that one of the main characters had my last name...Commander William Overbeck, played by William "Bill and Ted's Grim Reaper" Sadler...It was pretty fun to watch and hear "Overbeck" in the dialogue...Fred Randall (Harland Williams), looking like Pee Wee Herman trying to impersonate Cosmo Kramer, is a designer of spaceflight simulation software who gets pulled into a mission to send the first humans to Mars. Along for the ride is Cmdr. Overbeck, Julie Ford (Jessica Lundy) and a chimpanzee. Some of the highlights (or lowlights) of the film: Fred paints with astronaut food, gets stuck in the space toilet, farts uncontrollably while in his space suit, leads the world in singing "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands", and repeatedly utters what I guess is supposed to be the film's catchphrase: "It wasn't me!" Blecch.

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
Filling the void in our national life left by the retirement of Pee-wee Herman, Williams plays the kind of guy who lands on Mars and tells Mission Control: ``Look! I'm the first man to walk backward on Mars!'' Williams (from TV's ``Simon'') plays Fred Z. Randall, computer nerd, whose dream since childhood has been to be an astronaut...``RocketMan'' is not inspired or brilliant or original, but it's the kind of movie that gives you a goofy grin half of the time. A lot of the credit goes to Williams, who has the knack of almost making you think he doesn't know how obnoxious his character is. ``It wasn't me!'' he shouts, every time he screws up. For example, when he falls out of the lander door and inadvertently becomes the first man on Mars. And when his air hose is linked to Sadler's, and Sadler realizes someone has cut the cheese. - Roger Ebert
