| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Madacy's Rock On '70s series is a low-priced roundup of popular songs from each year of the decade. The songs are wide-ranging and, although they seem thrown together with little regard to context or pacing, do a fairly good job of recreating what 45 minutes or so of listening to a decent AM station would have been like. The 1979 volume contains some pop (Dr. Hook's "When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman," Little River Band's "Lonesome Loser"), some disco (Chic's "Le Freak," Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell"), a bit of new wave (Blondie's "Heart of Glass," the Knack's "My Sharona"), and a couple of MOR weepers (Cliff Richard's "We Don't Talk Anymore," Maureen McGovern's "Different Worlds"). It is a bit on the skimpy side, certainly too much so to be considered an essential purchase. Perhaps a '70s neophyte with a limited budget could make some use of it. ~ Tim Sendra | | Each volume of Excelsior's Rock On series provides an extremely arbitrary snapshot of the year that's being covered. Only 12 songs are on each disc, meaning that a good amount of space goes to waste, and there's little in the way of stylistic focus. Needless to say, these hastily patched-together budget-line discs shouldn't be considered suitable documentations for the years they are covering. Rock On: 1979 includes the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "An American Dream," Blondie's "Heart of Glass," Dr. Hook's "When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman," Chic's "I Want Your Love," and the Doobie Brothers' "Minute by Minute." ~ Andy Kellman | | Madacy's Rock On '70s series is a low-priced roundup of popular songs from each year of the decade.
