"...it's fascinating just because it's so different from the norm. Animation junkies and Heavy Metal fans should enjoy it."  Chris Wood, Toon Zone
"...a masterpiece of outre animation...wildly ambitious...a triumph in animated feature film."  Keith Breese, FilmCritic.com

Editor's Note

Animated fantasy feature film with rock soundtrack. Set in a distant-future, postapocalypse world with an evil magician and characters of mutant human/canine/feline/rodent extraction. Good animation. Artists and titles include: Deborah Harry - "Angel's Song," Lou Reed - "My Name is Mok," Cheap Trick - "Born to Raise Hell," Earth, Wind and Fire - "Dance, Dance, Dance," and others.

Sight and Sound
"[It] holds up remarkably well thanks to the music, the smooth, often witty dialogue and the strong graphics and animation." 08/01/2006 p.99

The Critical Eye 9 of 10
Rock & Rule is one of cult animation's great mysteries. In many ways, it seemed to have everything going for it, and yet it fizzled at the box office and its video release was tepid at best. Unlike other cult films such as Heavy Metal, Fritz the Cat, and Akira, there are few--if any--screenings of Rock & Rule at colleges and repertory cinemas. And yet the movie has a devout following, despite its low profile...With everything Rock & Rule had going for it, it's a bit bewildering that the movie didn't succeed in the box office. Perhaps the time still wasn't right for such an offbeat animated feature. Perhaps it was perceived as being too adult for the children's market, yet too "soft" for the adult market. - Emru Townsend
