| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel: Peter Green (guitar); Peter Green (vocals, harmonica); Nigel Watson (vocals, guitar); Paul Rodgers (vocals); Roger Cotton (piano); Neil Murray (bass guitar); Larry Tolfree (drums). | | Liner Note Author: Russell Beecher. | | Most people know Peter Green as the visionary guitar hero behind the original, blues-rocking version of Fleetwood Mac, but he's pursued a solo career ever since departing the Mac, and THE ROBERT JOHNSON SONGBOOK brings him back to his roots. Covering the songs of his early influence Robert Johnson, Green wisely avoids trying to rock things up, opting instead for an appropriately lo-fi, acoustic (if not always solo) approach. Green's deep, husky voice is worlds away from Johnson's high, ghostly wail, lending a different feel to the material, but when Green digs into his guitar on classics like "Terraplane Blues" and "Ramblin' on My Mind," you can hear his Delta blues roots come rushing to the fore. | | The Robert Johnson Songbook is Peter Green's first recording made entirely of covers of the music written by the King of the Delta Blues. Unfortunately, though pleasant, The Robert Johnson Songbook lacks the warmth and soulfulness of its successor -- Hot Foot Powder. The Robert Johnson Songbook features Green's Splinter Group, plus a guest appearance by Paul Rodgers. [In 2003, and later in 2008, the United Kingdom's Snapper imprint reissued this set with two extra tracks, bringing the album to a total of 16 cuts -- with different covers for each. The first reissue contains the original Artisan cover, while the 2008 one contains a cheesier painted one. The extra numbers here are "Terraplane Blues" and "Dust My Broom," both essential to the Robert Johnson story.] ~ Tim Griggs and Thom Jurek | Producer: Peter Green; Nigel Watson; Kenny Denton | Engineer: Kenny Denton | Musical Guests | | Nigel Watson | | Paul Rodgers |
