| Singer/songwriter/acoustic guitarist Ani Difranco returns to the studio with her musical cohorts for a double album of all-new material. Several of the 29 tracks here (among them "Heartbreak
Even," "Subdivision," "So What," and "Garden of Simple") have already become audience favorites at Ani's concerts over the last year, but there are plenty of surprises as well. Half the songs on each disc find Ani flying solo, while the other half feature the members of her road-tested live band. Watch for guest appearances by Maceo Parker and Jon Hassell on horns and Lloyd Maines
(father of the Dixie Chick's Natalie Maines) on pedal steel.
The elegantly designed package is divided by theme into two parts, Revelling and Reckoning, each with its own lyric-and-photo

Songs like "Ain't That the Way" are a sweet yet gritty mosaic of melody. Her friend Maceo Parker drops by, saxophone in hand, for a radiant turn on "What How When Where (Why Who)," a breathy, brilliant, nomadic tune also featuring Hans Teuber's brilliant flute, which sets the sweet, misty tone of the whole album. DiFranco's knack for telling a story, and her skill in turning simple lines like "I'm learning how to be alone," on the beautiful "Marrow," into something special, persists throughout. |
