| The First Career-spanning 4-CD Boxed Set by this groundbreaking & influential band. The 57 tracks include many unreleased live tracks and versions unavailable in the U.S.
Album Facts: This deluxe release is packaged similarly to the Joy Division compilation Heartandsoul. Includes rare and hard-to-find versions of classic New Order songs, including dance mixes and live tracks. Artwork directed by legendary designer Peter Saville. Bobbie Gillespie of Primal Scream has chosen the 4th disc of live tracks, all of which are previously unreleased. Disc 3 comprises club mixes by many high profile re-mixers including the Chemical Brothers, Arthur Baker, and Steve "Silk" Hurley.
One of the most influential acts in British music, New Order have consistently and successfully merged dance culture with elements of rock and pop, setting their own high standard with their first single "Ceremony," which was released over 20 years ago. In 1983 the band released "Blue Monday," a track that became an instant worldwide smash, and was highly influential in the rise and development of modern electronic pop music (also the best-selling 12" single of all time). The band was also pivotal in the rise of Manchester, England, as an important musical center and the "Madchester" musical genre, the growth of Factory records, and the establishment of the unique nightclub, The Hacienda. True to the band's unconventional approach to the music industry, the boxed set has been compiled by four people who have been close to New Order over their history. Each of the following have been responsible for one CD: Bobbie Gillespie (from Primal Scream), Mike Pickering (Manchester DJ, chef at The Hacienda, and the man behind M People), and Miranda Sawyer and John McCreedy (both U.K. based journalists who have followed New Order throughout their career).
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar): Gillian Gilbert (keyboards); Peter Hook (bass); Stephen Morris (drums). | | Producers include: New Order, Martin Hannett, Arthur Baker, John Robie, Stephen Hague. | | One of many New Order compilations, 2002's RETRO distinguishes itself as a thematically arranged four-disc box set that covers the dance-friendly U.K. alt-rock band's 1981-2001 output. With all CDs arranged non-chronologically, the "Pop" disc features catchy usual-suspect singles such as "Blue Monday" and "True Faith," while "Fan" delves into revered lesser-known tracks such as the propulsive "Procession" and the chiming "Leave Me Alone." "Club," not surprisingly, consists largely of remixed tracks (including a Chemical Brothers-tweaked version of "Here to Stay"), and "Live" presents concert performances (most notably a '81 recording of "In a Lonely Place") selected by, of all people, Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie. Far from a tidy collection, RETRO does touch on many fine moments by the beloved British act, though those looking for a more, well, orderly set may want to seek out '05's SINGLES. |
