Editor's Note

Follow the ultimate horror heroine Alice (Milla Jovovich) from the moment she wakes up on a shower floor in the mansion above the suspicious Umbrella Corporation laboratory to the night she valiantly attempts to contain a devastating bio-virus to the confines of the doomed Raccoon City. And certainly don't miss the endgame, which lets loose legions of the undead, hell dogs, ravenous crows, and grotesque biochemical weapons in the ravaged desert that was once Las Vegas. All the mayhem unfolds in this action-paced movie trilogy comprised of RESIDENT EVIL, RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE, and RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION, all based on the monster-hit videogame franchise. See individual titles for complete details.

Professional Reviews
DVD Talk 7 of 10
[Extinction] The third film of this franchise, "Extinction," recalls the unsophisticated joys of the original, while managing to find a breezy junk food tone of its own..."Extinction" obviously digests more easily as a visual exercise than a robust selection of dramatic filmmaking. Stealing bits from "Mad Max," "Alien: Resurrection," "Day of the Dead" (with the birth of intelligent zombies), and, if you can believe it, Hitchcock's "The Birds" (while we see the return of the zombie dogs, look out for a zombie crow attack), Mulcahy and screenwriter Paul W.S. Anderson (the director of the first installment) are desperate to forge something of an identity for the picture, but it's thin stuff, which is useful at times, but not when trying to find a payoff for the film...Mimicking the "boss fight" climax of "Apocalypse," "Extinction" offers another go-around with a monster, only with less effort in the crucial escalation department. The slimy bad guy is just kinda there, without much introduction and even less of a farewell. The sunny side of the street here is the killer set-up for a fourth installment, hinting at the sort of gleeful mayhem Anderson is probably incapable of exploring to satisfying ends. However, it's an imaginative climax to an agreeable horror/action film; one that holds together nicely as long as the viewer doesn't dig too deeply for quality. - Brian Orndorf

Reel.com 8 of 10
[Resident] Why Resident Evil succeeds is the result of well-executed expansion: making the ideas bigger, making the characters bigger, making the genre bigger. The dream of a video-game film is to stand on its own legs, to be its own entity, and though Resident Evil doesn't quite reach that pinnacle, it comes close. The entirely unsubtle combination of genres (sci-fi, action, horror) is audacious and confrontational. It's too ballsy to be an homage and too self-assured to be derivative, so it ends up being something different -- a direct but dreamy story that uses the basic conventions of horror to wind up at a chilling sci-fi conclusion...At its core, Resident Evil is a slasher movie that closely follows that genre's rules -- claustrophobic enclosed location, finite group of protagonists/victims, one leader, enthusiastic and imaginative death scenes, and a crippling sense of dread and suspense. The horror film in a sci-fi setting is hardly original -- Alien and even Resident Evil director Paul Anderson's own Event Horizon have done it before (and better) -- but Jovovich's convincing foray into ass-kicking is quality entertainment, and, like all good slasher movies, there are a number of great kills... - Neal Block

Film Threat 7 of 10
[Apocalypse] Critically speaking, movies based on video games always start on a disadvantageous position. Let's face it: when your best films for comparison are "Super Mario Bros.," "Street Fighter," and "Wing Commander," expectations are understandably lowered. Hell, even the first "Resident Evil" was a mixed bag. It had its moments, but most of them came after a solid 45 minutes of snooze, and what interesting scenes there were seemed inserted simply for the purpose of looking cool (the decapitating laser grid), rather than making any kind of narrative sense. In spite (or perhaps because) of this, the original enjoyed moderate box office success, but nobody figured "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" - second in what appears to be an ongoing series based on Capcom's popular zombie horror games - would break new cinematic ground. And it doesn't. "Apocalypse" is dumb, loud, and ludicrous in the extreme, and I actually enjoyed it. - Pete Vonder Haar
