International superstar Chow Yun-Fat (John Woo's Hard-Boiled) makes his Hollywood debut with Oscar®-winner Mira Sorvino (1995 Best Supporting Actress, Mighty Aphrodite) in The Replacement Killers, a fierce and explosive action thriller from director Antoine Fuqua (Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" video).

After he betrays Mr. Wei, the ruthless crime boss who hired him to avenge his son's death, professional killer John Lee (Chow) goes on the run. Enlisting the aid of beautiful document forger Meg Coburn (Sorvino), Lee attempts to return to his family in China before they are victimized for his betrayal. But Wei's army of "replacement killers" is hot on his trail, and now both he and Meg are targets of their impressive firepower. With both sides fully armed and determined to fight to the death, an ultra-violent shoot-out breaks out when they finally face off against each other. It's "a seamless fusion of Hong Kong action-adventure style and cool" (The New York Times) that will blow everyone away - including you!

"A sleek piece of filmmaking."  Stephen Holden, The New York Times
"Chow Yun-Fat is a legend in the making."  Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Editor's Note

Versatile Hong Kong box office giant Chow Yun-Fat makes a Hollywood splash as a John Lee, Chinese hitman beholden to drug kingpin Mr. Wei (Hong Kong stalwart Ken Tsang, in an interesting reversal of his "crusty cop" persona). The good news is that Lee's free after one hit; the bad news is that Wei wants revenge on a cop who killed his son--by killing the cop's son. Lee decides to run rather than kill the boy, and Wei doesn't take kindly to the betrayal. Tough-talking passport forger Meg Coburn (Mira Sorvino) creates a new identity for Lee, but that's of little help when they must face Wei's army of "replacement killers." First-timer Fuqua provides eye-candy visuals and plenty of action set pieces. John Woo executive produced.

Fortunately, The Replacement Killers does more than simply mimic The Killer. Carefully constructed to play to Chow's strengths as both an icon and an actor, The Replacement Killers is a dazzlingly slick exercise in action filmmaking that should not only thrill Chow's many devoted fans, but win him legions of new admirers as well... As scripted by ex-cop Ken Sanzel, The Replacement Killers would be little more than an average genre exercise if not for the pure magnetism of Chow's persona and a dizzying display of visual virtuosity by first-time director Antoine Fuqua. Best known as the director of the award-winning "Gangsta's Paradise" video, Fuqua makes an absolutely stunning debut here... - Wade Major

Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10
...What I liked about the film was its simplicity of form and its richness of visuals. There's a certain impersonality about the story; Chow and Sorvino don't have long chats between the gunfire. They're in a ballet of Hong Kong action imagery: bodies rolling out of gunshot range, faces frozen in fear, guys toppling off fire escapes, grim lips, the fetishism of firearms, cars shot to pieces, cops that make Dragnet sound talky. The first-time director, Antoine Fuqua, is a veteran of commercials and music videos; with cinematographer Peter Lyons Collister, he gets a sensuous texture onto the screen that makes you feel the roughness of walls, the clamminess of skin, the coldness of guns. The Replacement Killers is as abstract as a jazz instrumental, and as cool and self-assured. - Roger Ebert

5 of 5 Terrific Stateside Debut! Saturday, January 29, 2000
Etzkorn from Cashmere, WA

The Replacement Killers is absolutely one of the best anti-hero films to date. Chow Yun-Fat and Mira Sorvino play some of their best roles in this exciting action packed movie.

4 of 5 The Replacement Killers? Wednesday, December 22, 1999
storm from NY, NY
A good movie, but a bit short. Definitely not the best that I have seen from Chow Yun Fat. Was actually expecting more from the movie even with all the action scenes. Mira Sorvino portrayed her role very well. The movie could have used a better title as the replacement killers were not the actual focus of the movie. Worth watching.

5 of 5 Must see this! Monday, September 06, 1999
Ted from Abilene, TX
If you liked The Professional, I think this movie is for you! It has a lot of great action mixed with great tunes (which oddly enough didn't make their way onto the soundtrack). From its wordless but bloody beginning, The Replacement Killers entertains and keeps you interested!
