| | | Leading economists in the area of trade policy and international economics from within the region of sub-Saharan Africa and outside the region have collaborated on a very timely set of issues pertinent to Africa's place in and its impact on the world economy. While the first volume articulated the major policy and research issues, the second volume contains country studies which apply the framework issues and methods of study to individual country situations. The project found that after 30 years of experimentation, sub-Saharan Africa's romance with regional integration remains unabated. Previous and existing regional integration efforts, however, have generally achieved little success. It is not immediately clear that country-level trade liberalization attempts (induced by various structural adjustment programs) are consistent with regional integration undertakings of the various countries. By bringing together many experienced researchers and their research centers, the project will help build a critical mass of expertise for dealing with the kinds of problems focused upon in this project.
