Notes & Personnel Info |  | Arrangers: Roger Lewis; Touter Harvey; Johnny Nash. | | A fine party disc with an unbeatable selection of Jamaican rocksteady and roots reggae hits ranging from Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop" to the Melodians' reverent "Rivers of Babylon," and including sides by Bob Marley ("Soul Shakedown Party," "Lively Up Yourself"), Toots & the Maytals ("Pressure Drop"), and the Ethiopians ("Train to Skaville"), it's hard to say why Reggae Pulse seems to come up as less than the sum of its parts. Maybe it's the sequencing, which has been tried a couple of different ways in the various editions of this release, or maybe it's because this compilation tries to be all things at once. The songs are certainly here, most of which are bona fide classics, and certainly no one will be the lesser for owning this package. Somehow, though, it feels like the real story of Jamaica's revolutionary music gets lost in the shuffle. ~ Steve Leggett | | Famous more for their muso-friendly comps than introductory offerings, Trojan has seen fit here to give the people what they want with a popular yet solid mix of reggae highlights. Bob Marley is here of course ("Lively up Yourself"), as is Jimmy Cliff, Third World, Desmond Dekker, Dennis Brown, Toots & the Maytals, and even Marley's famous offspring, the Melody Makers. This is not to say that some relatively more obscure fare is missing, what with the likes of Dave and Ansel Collins' "Double Barrel," Althea and Donna's "Up Town Top Ranking," and the Pioneers' "Let Your Yeah Be Yeah" on display. But fans of the Jamaican Top 40 need not fear, since there's plenty of chart-toppin' booty by Musical Youth, Inner Circle (the theme from Cops?), and Johnny Nash still to be had. ~ Stephen Cook | | The alternately dark, happy, loving, and rebellious music from Jamaica known throughout the world as Reggae is well represented here.
