He's taken them hostage. They're driving him nuts.

Features: DVD

Denis Leary plays an unfortunate cat burglar, who is abandonded by his partner in the middle of a heist and is forced to take an irritating Connecticut couple (Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis) hostage. He soon finds that he got more than he bargained for when the couple's blackmailing son and despicable in-laws step into the picture. Before long they're driving him nuts with their petty bickering and family problems. The only way for him to survive is to be their referee and resolve their differences before he can be nabbed by the police.

Editor's Note

It's Christmas Eve and Gus, a cat burglar making the final heist of his career, trips the alarm system in a suburban home, forcing him to take the occupants hostage. Little does he know his Christmas is the one that's going to be ruined as he finds himself caught between a relentlessly bickering husband and wife and their fully dysfunctional family. As Gus soon discovers, there is no cure for rancor.

Plot Summary

Gus is a pretty clever cat burglar, but he's having a really bad Christmas Eve. He just stole precious gems from a wealthy amusement park owner. But his plan to escape has gone awry. So he ducks into Lloyd and Caroline's house only to find himself caught in the middle of a marriage from hell. Lloyd and Caroline are possibly the most dysfunctional pair in the world. To make matters worse, the unhappy twosome are expecting their in-laws for dinner. Once the guests arrive, Gus -- who has already taken their son hostage -- makes Lloyd and Caroline agree to pretend he's their marriage counselor.

Los Angeles Times
"...Enthusiastically mean-spirited....It has as much fun being malicious as Snow White did being squeaky clean..." 03/09/1994 p.F1

Chicago Sun-Times
"...[Leary] creates an entertaining character. And Davis and Spacey, both naturally verbal, develop a manic counterpoint in their arguments that elevates them to a sort of art form..." 03/11/1994 p.37

Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10
Material like this is only as good as the acting and writing. The Ref is skillful in both areas. Dennis Leary, who has a tendency, like many standup comics, to start shouting and try to make points with overkill, here creates an entertaining character. And Davis and Spacey, both naturally verbal, develop a manic counterpoint in their arguments that elevates them to a sort of art form. - Roger Ebert

5 of 5 Funniest Christmas Movie Monday, December 03, 2007
A Viewer from Greensboro, NC

This movie contains the most hilarious family drama. The family the film is centered around lives in a nice neigherborhood and looks like they have it good from the outside, but a burglar in the area (Dennis Leary) gets the inside scoop when he picks the Chaucer family's (with Kevin Spacey) house to hide in on Christmas eve after a home-robbery goes sour. Great foul-mouthed family arguments, as the in-laws and greedy grandma seem to forget about the criminal with a gun hosting their holiday affair and make personal stabs of criticism at one another back and forth. I watch this evey year at least once. I never get sick of it. It was a gut-buster when it came out a decade ago and it's a gut-buster today.
