 Editor's Note
ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS: Mob-ruled 1928 Chicago is not big enough for the rat-a-tat comedy and songs of this popular favorite about the do-gooder gangsters who fleece the rich and give to the poor as a front for their not-so-legal activities. OCEAN'S ELEVEN: This caper comedy, perhaps the most uncharacteristic film of director Lewis Milestone's career, stars Frank Sinatra as Danny Ocean. He pulls together a collection of 10 old war buddies to pull a heist of five casinos on the same night. Not surprisingly, the characters happen to be members of the fabled Rat Pack: Sam Harmon (Dean Martin), Josh Howard (Sammy Davis, Jr.) Mushy O'Connors (Joey Bishop), and Jimmy Foster (Peter Lawford). Everything goes right until, of course, something goes wrong. 4 FOR TEXAS: When con men Zack Thomas (Frank Sinatra) and Joe Jarrett (Dean Martin) team up to open a gambling den, they quickly realize that business in the Wild West isn't so easy. Both miscreant banker Harvey Burden (Victor Buono) and loose-cannon gunman Matson (Charles Bronson) are out to stifle Zack and Joe's moneymaking schemes. Luckily, the grifters still find plenty of time to romance a couple of voluptuous frontier babes (Anita Ekberg and Ursula Andress).

| | Professional Reviews | FilmCritic.com 8 of 10 [Ocean's] Implausible yet wholly unforgettable, Ocean's Eleven is as much fun as it is a misogynistic relic of a bygone era. Essentially, the Rat Pack of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford are playing themselves as ex-military playboy buddies who decide to pull off a daring heist on New Year's Eve, robbing five Las Vegas casinos in one fell swoop...Ocean's Eleven is the kind of movie you turn on and just hang out to, just like the Rat Pack would have done, as you enjoy a scotch and soda on a Saturday afternoon while Dean Martin croons "Ain't that a kick in the head..." in the background. - Christopher Null Brilliant Observations on 1173 Films 7 of 10 [Texas] Great cast but it's a satire that isn't very clever or funny. Charles Bronson is a Wile E. Coyote-type cowboy who meets his end on a riverboat paddle wheel. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are themselves, and it pretty much looks like Dino could kick his ass if he wanted. Some of the double entendre-laden dialogues between Dean and Ursula Andress were probably considered witty and racy at the time. The usually-reliable Three Stooges show up for an incredibly dry routine. - Clayton Trapp Reel.com 9 of 10 [Robin] Ocean's 11 may be the most famous of the Rat Pack movies, but Robin and the Seven Hoods is the best. While the former suffers from a slapped-together screenplay and an overabundance of poorly developed characters - in spite of its undeniable sense of style - the latter energetically entertains as a musical that taps not just the talents of Rat Packers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., but Bing Crosby and Peter Falk as well. - Pam Grady
