"Sharon Stone as you have never seen her--a six shooter on her hip, revenge in her heart..." Bonnie Churchill, National News Syndicate "One of the best old-style Westerns to hit the big screen in a long time." Andy Greiser, Ft. Worth Star Telegram "Sly and savvy. One of the most brilliantly stylized Western settings ever." Jay Carr, The Boston Globe "One of the most original Westerns in years. Stone gives a dead-on performance..." Jeff Craig, Sixty-Second Preview "The movie is quick and slick, but its far from dead." Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune
 Editor's Note
Sharon Stone stars as Ellen, a beautiful gunslinger with a cloudy past. She arrives in the town of Redemption with a bone to pick, namely with one John Herod (Gene Hackman, BONNIE AND CLYDE, THE ROYAL TENNENBAUMS), with whom she shares a shady history. Ellen signs up for the annual quick-draw contest, which awards $230,000 to the winner, but her real motivation is revenge. Raimi incorporates beautiful photography and camerawork, and surprising new twists to the familiar spaghetti Western tropes, breathing new life into the genre.
 Plot Summary
A young woman seeks to avenge her father's death at the annual gunfighter's tournament in the ghostly town called Redemption, where an outlaw named Herod rules with a brutal, calculating precision. The film is set on the town's one dusty street as one fighter after another is fatally eliminated from the ranks until only two fighters remain: the young woman, and Herod, her father's killer.

 | The Quick and the Dead - DVD Review By: James Brundage - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 8/28/2009 5:42 PM | |
All right, all right, I'm sorry I haven't been seeing the movies I should. I haven't seen A Simple Plan yet, I admit it. Everyone's been nagging me, bothering me about it, telling me: "James, it's such a great film." But I haven't seen it. Anyway, that apology aside, I'm very glad I took time to watch Sam Raimi's 1995 film The Quick and the Dead. About three weeks ago, I was talking with a friend of mine after seeing the excellent Miramax/Universal effort Shakespeare in Love. ...read the full review |

5 of 5 Quick & the Review Wednesday, December 29, 1999 Don Pierce from San Jose, California
Considering westerns are hardly made anymore, this is an entertaining movie. It is fast paced and delivers cliched but interesting characters. Sam Raimi brings another dimension to the western movie in that sometimes the action is surreal or cartoony but does not compromise the dark atmosphere of the movie. As far a westerns go, it is more plausible and entertaining than the recent Wild, Wild, West!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Thursday, July 29, 1999 Manbat from Sacramento, CA
A western from the man who brought you 'The Evil Dead' movies? and Sharon Stone is the lead actress? You wouldn't think it would work but Sam Raimi pulls it off. He takes a fair story that revolves around a lot of shoot outs and highlights it with some great camera work. He gets a good performance out of Sharon Stone (mostly since she doesn't say too much and mumbles
a lot-sorta like a wanna be Clint Eastwood). Gene
Hackman is always great to watch and plays the perfect bad guy. Leonardo DeCaprio is pretty good as the Kid, who covers up his insecurity with arrogance. Having Lance Henrikson in a supporting role as Ace is perfect and the shoot out scene with him is one of the highlights of the movie. Ultimately it's Sam Raimi's film and what could have been mediocre is saved by both
good direction and unique camera work. I only wish the DVD had the cut scene with Bruce Campbell as the preacher who performs the marriage of Leonardo DiCaprio to his girl right before the shoot out. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Very underrated!!! Thursday, July 01, 1999 Audie from Brooklyn NY
This movie is so underrated!!! Everytime this movie is shown on television I watch it from beginning to end because it is so good. An excellent cast, especially Gene Hackman, and Sam Raimi did a terrific job of directing. The cimematography was incredible!! Don't be discourage of this movie because Sharon Stone is the lead, in a western, she does a great job. Cool gunfights throughout the whole movie and never a dull moment in the movie. A great movie to get on DVD. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 Shoot Me! Tuesday, June 15, 1999 A.M. Ringlero from Scottsdale, AZ
. . . is what Sharon Stone should have said after making this film. Russell Crowe chained to a fountain, Leonardo di Caprio sleeping on a bed of TNT, and Ms. Stone sleeping with Leo -- please! Story is lame, horse's aren't. Miss it unless you really like to see Sharon in leather chaps or Leo in a cowboy hat held up by his ears. Was this review helpful?
