Acknowledged by many critics and fans as one of his very best-ever sessions, QUESTION finds Metheny matched with two fellow masters, acoustic bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes. (Haynes has played with virtually every major figure in jazz, including Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.) This trio's level of interaction approaches that of telepathy, achieving a rare balance between freewheeling improvisation and group cohesion. Less ethereal than some of Metheny's other efforts, QUESTION & ANSWER is classic, hard-swinging jazz in the vein of Jim Hall (a major Metheny influence) and Wes Montgomery. |
