Not all of the attention is innocent: covertly tracking their moves is stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a scarred, weathered rebel who leers from behind the wheel of his muscle car. As the girls settle into their beers, Mike's weapon, a white-hot juggernaut, revs just feet away... "The stunts, the sounds, the tempo were all so perfect, I walked out of the theater happy." FilmDailies.com "...a celebration of 1970's exploitation-movies and made to look like the real stuff...In this respect, it's a big success..." ItsVery Movie Review
 Editor's Note
Master director Quentin Tarantino (PULP FICTION) indulges his inner fanboy by paying homage to his favorite B-movies in DEATH PROOF. Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) stalks beautiful women with his deadly vintage car, but when he picks a trio of tough girls (Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, and Zoe Bell), he learns they aren't such easy prey. As with any Tarantino film, there are plenty of nods to pop culture. Most of the scenes are deliberately short on plot development, the dialogue comes thick and fast throughout, and the film stock is often cleverly manipulated to perfectly replicate the B-movie aesthetic. DEATH PROOF was originally released as part of the GRINDHOUSE double feature with Robert Rodriguez's PLANET TERROR.

The crash and chase scenes are thrilling..." 09/28/2007 p.89 Ultimate DVD 5 stars out of 5 -- "[The] well-placed soundtrack, enthusiastic direction and intelligent homage to cinema past combine to make a perfect slice of pulp fiction." 11/23/2007 p.106 Variety 8 of 10 Designed to replicate the look and cheap thrills of '70s-era exploitationers, the ultimate "Death Proof" differs from its sources of inspiration in three prominent ways: At 114 minutes, having grown by 27 minutes, it's considerably longer than such films ever were; its merits reside as much in its dialogue as in the kick-ass action, and it cost far, far more than a producer such as Roger Corman would ever have allowed...Setting is the parking lot of a roadside convenience store, where the film crew workers -- played by Tracie Thoms, Rosario Dawson and Mary Elizabeth Winstead -- make a pit stop while heading to pick up a visiting pal (Zoe Bell) at the airport. Russell pulls up and hassles them momentarily, but the mood is generally relaxed and genial, a warm-up for the overheated action to come. - Todd McCarthy
