While the world is obsessing over Apple's new iPod touch, let's not forget about all the other cool MP3 players out there. You know, the ones that aren't locked down to proprietary file formats and limited to use with only one PC or Mac, ahem...read the full review

4 of 5 Great clerity on screen Monday, November 30, 2009
Kevin from Amarillo, TX

The screen on this player is the best out of any other PMP. The navigation is a little weird, but once you get used to it, it works well. When using the SD memory card, it doesn't quite have the same options that playing from internal memory has. It just lets you browse the contents of the memory card and play the content from there. The built in memory, separates everything out first by type, (i.e. Video, Music, photo, etc...) then it drills down from there. The card only shows the files on the card, and then you play those files. Videos need to be converted to AVI files or some kind of usable format. You have to already have the video file though. It does not come with software to get movies from DVD to a usable file. You have to purchase that separately. There are good ones out there you just need to look. None of the free ones work worth a darn though. I paid $35 for mine and it works great. If you want to buy music from iTunes, you will need a program like Tunebite to convert them to MP3. Tunebite lets you edit the ID3 tags so this player can organize them easier. Overall I am quite satisfied, but I am an advanced user. Normal users might find this player a little intimidating.

5 of 5 way better than iPod Wednesday, January 21, 2009
KM from VA
Former user of iPod. Zen has some big advantages: (1) Simpler - no stupidity of having to have iTunes! (Drag n Drop music in windows explorer, or use the software) (2) Standard USB cable for charging/synching. (3) Long battery life (4) Excellent sound quality: million times better than iPod (5) Really good headphones (Zen X-Fi has much better ones) (6) Small and light (7) Easily add storage (8) Good screen size, and much higher resolution (9) Can use to carry files/pictures easily.

5 of 5 Very good first MP3 Player Monday, January 05, 2009
Dysien from Charlotte, NC
This is a great little MP3 player. I have read several other reviews that talk about the short interface cord and I have to admit it is short (6 inches) but the plug into the Zen is one of the basic, what I call T plugs, so I just use the cable for my digital camera with no problems. Picture is great and the interface, both on the Zen and computer are very user friendly and easy to understand. I had orignally thought of getting the 8GB just to make sure I had the room, but the SD card option makes that a mute point. The expansion options are great. One thing you may want to realize is the only way to connect to external devices (other than the computer) is through the earphone jack. There is no port like an Ipod. (Sorry for the bad word)

5 of 5 Great product for price Friday, December 19, 2008
mike from GA
I have been burned by earlier model MP3 players but this one has been good. Right out of the box it has been easy to transfer music, videos, cd's and pod cast. The video quality is very good. I have some old Warner brothers Bugs bunny cartoons on the player and they look great. Who needs the high priced over valued I pods. I may purchase more as gifts.

5 of 5 I Like The Zen Monday, November 10, 2008
JaeDee from Chicago, IL
I was pleasantly surprised when I received the Zen the day after I ordered it. It had been sent out from a local warehouse so it got here super fast, even without paying extra for next day delivery...nice! I finally got the FM radio going, but am a bit intimidated by the rest of the directions. I am extremely impressed with the sample videos, even though the screen is so small the resolution is fabulous! It will be VERY watchable! I look forward to putting my photos on it and maybe some music too. I really bought it to put my relaxation/mediation MP3's on it. Since my old computer crapped out on me, I can no longer use it to get online and now that I have a new machine, I will have to load the program onto it. I'm going to call Zen just to make sure what to do. I really don't like the fact that you can't run the program on at least two computers in your own house...what the heck? Isn't the Zen player 'really' mine???? Sheesh! But the product itself? I'm very happy with it and look forward to many years of use.

5 of 5 Great player for the price Thursday, October 23, 2008
jchen from Diamond bar, CA
The player works great out of the box. Music files and pictures are easily transfered. Some video formats will need to be converted, and can take a while, but still no problem watching them. Overall, I like the design and feel of it (not too big or small). Nice to be able to set any picture as your background as well.

5 of 5 I love the Creative Zen MP3 Saturday, October 11, 2008
A Customer from Bridgeport, MI
This is a wonderful device for listening to music. I also added an 8g SD card and put numerous pictures of my grandkids and family on it, and I can play it in sequence, or find a certain picture to show off. This player is easy to use; my husband has the same one and he uses more of the features than I do. We both love how it sounds, how easy it is to move songs to different folders or start a new folder and the picture feature is great. We haven't tried videos on it, but didn't intend to when we bought it. We did put on screen protectors right away. I bought the leather case for mine, and it works great. I am very satisfied.

5 of 5 Good Value Sunday, August 10, 2008
A Customer from Gainesville, FL
Very happy with my purchase overall. The screen is bright and clear, except in bright sunlight of course. Sound is good at higher volumes. Still discovering how to use the Zen after 2 weeks. Some features a little hard to figure out. Video conversion is SLOW! I still have not figured out how to get data on the SD card yet. Its a little strange that you have to insert the card with the unit powered up instead of off. The software categorizes podcasts as if they were music which makes them hard to find if you have a lot of music. The software is for use on one computer only. Still happy with my purchase at $90, including shipping.

5 of 5 The Zen Sunday, August 03, 2008
Lorrie from Texas
Good little product. We already have an apple ipod (my son has one), but I wanted something less expensive, that I could watch movies on. Once you figure it out, it's not hard to use, which is true about anything, really. I was able to buy a movie from Amazon Unbox and it transferred right into my Zen with no problems. I'm a happy customer!

5 of 5 Best features for the price Friday, August 01, 2008
A Customer from Santa Barbara, CA
Love this player. Great looks, easy to use and costs a lot less than competitors while offering better features. No point buying higher GB models since memory cards are dirt cheap right now. Bought 8GB SD card for this for $20. A wall charger would be nice, but it's not really a con since AC-USB chargers are ~ $5 shipped from eBay.

4 of 5 Fairly well only a few problems Friday, July 11, 2008
Feda from Winthrop, Ma
only comes with a little usb cord and no AC adapter. and if your music dosent have correct listings, as in album name and artist, it dosent show up in the artist menue of music. You can still acess the music from the "All Tracks" menue tho. the volume is nice and it is easy to put music on there with windows media player. You can also put videos from youtube on their jus need conversion software (mine was free). it also scratches easily so watch where u put it and prob by the screen protecttor with it, trust me it will be a good idea. overall it is a great product with expandable memory and an overall goob buy!

4 of 5 Great gadget for a pewney price. Monday, July 07, 2008
A Customer from Pittsburgh, PA
I wanted to buy an mp3 player, but didn't want to get something hight end. That is one reason why I chose the creative zen. It works just fine. Sometimes, after you sync it, it needs to be reset using the tiny reset button on the bottom. Also, when I 'unlock' it sometimes, the screen becomes comepletely white or too bright/pixilated. This is solved by locking the device again, waiting for the screen to shut off and then unlocking it. May need to do it a couple of times. While these things are a little annoying, the player itself is awesome. It has an EQ. so you can adjust the levels of bass, mid, trebble, etc. It plays videos and they are very sharp and clear. The menu is easy to use, and you can make playlists out of songs on the player (without needing to use a computer, I mean). All in all, I am satisfied with this product. As long as it continues to play the music, I have no regrets.

5 of 5 Love it! Monday, June 30, 2008
A Customer from Dallas, TX
Bought this as a Father's Day gift for my husband. He loves new gadgets, but is usually a little standoffish when it comes to the set up. That usually falls to me. But the Zen was very user friendly. It looks and sounds great. Hubby upgraded to noise cancelling headphones, but I thought the original buds were fine. I'm no expert though. It was an especially good bargain at the time. The 4GB at Buy.com was the same price as the 2GB at Walmart. And with the 30 day free trial with Napster, he's just about filled it up. He's ordering another 4GB SD. That ought to be all the music he ever needs, as he's into older cuts. Says it's the best gift ever.

3 of 5 Great value for the price Saturday, June 28, 2008
A Customer from Copley, Ohio
I bought this recently to replace my 1st gen ipod shuffle. This is a wonderful little player. Sounds great, looks nice and the video and picture playback is very nice. I did not like two things: The headphones did not fit my ears and I had to buy sony headphones. Also, I bought a 4GB SD card but the music stored on it is not integrated with the music on the player's memory; you can browse the contents of the card and play them but you can only browse by name. If you are on the fence about buying it, buy it. You will not regret it.

5 of 5 good buy Wednesday, June 25, 2008
A Customer from red wing mn
I had a personal player but it was difficult to see the menu on the small screen so I found the Zen 4mg and its so much easier to navigate. I doubt I will use the movie ability but the SD card memory expansion is nice and its easy to navigate with the menu screen too and long titles scroll, another nice feature. I'm not too sure about the recording ability yet, a short trial seemed to prove that it must be placed within a few inches of the source, maybe not good for recording a lecture.

5 of 5 Good Product Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Paddy from ZZ
My neice bought this with her babysitting money. It has a very sharp display and while it is not an I-pod and not directly compatible with itunes (we have to make a CD of a song after we buy it and then import that to the MP3) it works very well for what it was designed to do. She really enjoys this MP3 player and uses it often.

1 of 5 won't power up, support nonexistent Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Dan from Saint paul
technical problems refer to Creative's website which puts you in and endless cycle of clicking on potential problems with documents for solutions, none of which address not powering up or non recognition. Can't contact via email as the link on site only brings you right back to beginning of choices of type of problem. no phone, no address no means of communicating with this company that I could find after half an hour of my day.

rudy from atlanta, ga
I do like Creative products. I broke my MicroPhoto and replaced it with this. 4gb is more than enough for my needs. The player is small and attractive and was easy to load and use. I do wish it came with a power charger but I'm typically around my laptop.

Jason from Clarkston, MI
This is a great MP3 and video player. Small enough to be cool, but a big enough screen to enjoy amazing video. I've owned other Creative products before, and always been impressed. This is no exception. At this price it is just an amazing value, and as always, Buy.com got it to me in a hurry, even with the free, budget shipping

I would seriously be wary of purchasing from this site. I ordered this and it never showed up. I cant get in touch with anyone and nobody will call me back. They proceeded to tell me it was dropped off on my front porch(I live in an apartment building)then I should look in my bushes(that dont exist)and said that sorry we cant send you your product. sorry for the inconvenience. what ever happened to signing for a product that cost that much money?

5 of 5 Awesome little media player! Tuesday, May 13, 2008
RCM from Kalamazoo, MI
I just purchased my Zen 4GB about a month ago and love it! The clarity of the screen is amazing and it is relatively easy to navigate. My daughter has an Ipod Nano (2nd Gen) and she's now jealous of me. Getting podcasts and other video transferred to the player certainly isn't a one click operation, but it's managable. The Zen Explorer software could use some more functionality built into it, but again it's managable. The forum on Creative's website has a lot of discussion and tips that help. I'm already wishing I had bought the 8GB version, but the nice thing with this player is that you can add memory via the SD card slot. Overall, I am very happy with my Zen purchase. Compared to what I paid for my daughter's Nano, which by the way has it's own little quirks, this Zen media player is a great value!

5 of 5 Fabulous Player Monday, May 12, 2008
Ernie from Bethlehem, PA
A wonderful Player with a perfect system that is easy to use. I copy my picture into it and it is very clear on the screen. The only flaw is, if I am tough, that the battery cannnot last long enough when I used it with an FM transmitter in my car.

5 of 5 Amazing Little Thing Tuesday, April 29, 2008
A Customer from Brooklyn, NY
I accidentally misplaced my 40GB Zen W so I missed it dearly. I decided to buy the 4GB as the 40GB was too big and bulky. The picture quality on this little thing was absolutely amazing. It's extremely lightweight and portable. Just slip it into your pocket and take it out anytime you want with no worries. It's easy to use and durable. It plays many movie formats, something you can't say about many other players. The only bad thing about it was the conversion and upload of movies onto this thing. Granted my PC isn't the newest one but the transfer was quite slow. My older Zen was much faster. Other than that I'm very happy with the purchase and would recommend it. P.S. I found my older Zen so I gave this to my wife. She loves it. Can watch her shows anytime now.

3 of 5 A nice media player but definitely not the best. Sunday, April 27, 2008
A Customer from Overland Park, KS
A good deal for the price paid. Excellent picture and good sound quality. I love watching my fav videos on the go. However didn't expect creative to ship such poor quality earphones and a very short usb connector, its just a couple of inches and the player is just an external drive when connected to the computer. You cant play anything while connected. The menu is very simple to navigate but could have been much better. There is no wrap so one has to repeat every step in the reverse order to come out of deep sub menus during navigation. The software supplied is simple but has very limited features to handle different data formats. When will creative comeup with a better key controls like scroll wheel ? The current key pad really sucks if you have to navigate along a very long list of albums.

2 of 5 Deeply Flawed Software Monday, April 21, 2008
A Customer from New York, NY
If you're like me and have thousands of mp3's that are not classified by album, then don't go near this player with a ten foot pole. The reason I say this is that when you attempt to browse songs by a particular artist or band, you can only view the songs by album - any song that does not have it's album tag filled in won't show up under that artist. Basically, if any track has no album info, it becomes invisible. Older Zen mp3 players had a "List all Tracks by Artist" option when you browsed a particular artist or band - selecting this option would show all the tracks by that artist in alphabetical order regardless of whether the album info was filled in for a track or not. The new Zen players do not have this option. I went to one artist on my player that I had 60 songs for, except none of the tracks had album info, and when I selected that artist the player told me their were no tracks by that artist on the player - totally and completely ridiculous. Worse yet, all those tracks that have no album associated with them will not play in shuffle mode. I loaded the player with 1000 songs that had no album info and 10 songs that did have their album info, and put the player into shuffle mode. Shuffle mode then told me their were only 10 songs on the player, and proceeded to play those 10 songs (the ones with album info) over and over, while completely ignoring the other 1000 songs (the ones without album info). This has to be about the dumbest thing I've seen in any consumer product in years. I've seen complaints about how lame the shuffle play feature is on these players and how they seem to play the same songs over and over in shuffle mode - well this is the reason why. A large percentage of these users tracks are not even being recognized in shuffle mode. If you keep all your mp3's tagged by album then you will be fine. If not, then don't go near this player.

5 of 5 Great all in one compact audio and video player Thursday, April 10, 2008
A Customer from New Jersey
This little, slim device has it all (compared to iPod) you get video, audio, recorder, fm radio, photoviewer. The video and photos are crisp and sound is awesome. My only grip is that this does not come with a suppied wall outlet charger and has to be charged through a PC USB (a separate wall charger can be purchased separately).

5 of 5 Good Product Monday, April 07, 2008
A Customer from New York, NY
The Creative Zen is a great alternative to the Nano. Although it is slightly larger, it fits nicely in your hand, and costs about 40% less. The battery life is solid, and the color screen is far superior to any other MP3 player I have seen. I have read some reviews about video playback, stating that it doesn't work well. I have had no issues with this so far. The CD that accompanies the player has software that converts your video file so that the Zen can read it. The conversion process takes a bit of time, but I have transferred more than one type of video file onto the player with no problems.

5 of 5 Best Player Around! Tuesday, April 01, 2008
Nikki from Pasadena, CA
I love this player!!! I looked into other MP3 players, but most do not have a FM tuner (so I can watch the TVs at the gym). It also has a nice video screen, and I've already downloaded a bunch of films from the public library to watch during long flights. It has a memory card slot so you can easily show people your photos. Finally, the battery life is fantastic. I used it for several days without a charge and it was still going strong. The only thing is that it is kinda hard to find a decent armband or belt clip (it has a horizontal layout, versus the more conventional vertical layout, so a universal case will not work for it). Otherwise, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Has all the features that you would want. It has a nice large display and easy to navigate menus. I think that it is even better than apples ipods, especially the price.

5 of 5 Life in a pocket Monday, March 31, 2008
Lee from Denver CO
I mainly use my Zen to watch videos and listen to the radio. The radio works like any other radio you've listened to, so I won't be saying much about it. It has worked flawlessly every day so far. The only con is you can't record it. The video playback is crystal clear thanks to the impressive screen. You do need to encode most videos and yes it does take some time with the included software. For encoding I use WinAVI video converter which is actually pretty quick. WinAVI converts a 40 minute video in about 8 minutes keeping the file size down to about 200 megs. I bought the 4 gig version of the Zen which I have full of videos and I added a 2 gig sd card. More than enough video for a round trip flight from Denver to Miami. The viewing angle is also extraordinary. The Zen is extremely light but somehow doesn't feel fragile. I did buy a case for it since I felt that it would get scratched if I kept putting it in my pocket with no protection. All in all I would say this thing is fantastic and that's before the great deal I got from Buy.com

5 of 5 fantastic product...excellent video Sunday, March 30, 2008
Koushik from Parsippany, NJ
I'm really satisfied with the Creative ZEN i bought from Buy.com. They really delivered it quick and it was in excellent condition. The product itself is very good. Nice looks, nice menu, good overall features including the excellent organizer sync. The sound quality is top rated as well the video quality. Supports a lot of formats. Only cons whatsoever is the headphone supplied with it. It is not up to the standard with the player itself. Creative should supply a better standard one.

5 of 5 Fantastic Player!! Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Next Level Audio from Massapequa NY
Bought this unit for my 8 year old son and he loves it!! Big Screen, easy to navigate. Software for conversion works as expected. Bright screen with many features ( too bad no bluetooth ) but cetainly not a complaint. highly recommend this unit. ( I am not an Apple buyer ) Very slim and portable and easy to use!!! Purchased a protective neoprene sleeve from another retailer that came with screen protector and covers buttons well. Foam pads on headphones come off easily, but no real complaints about this product!!

5 of 5 Fantastic Buy! Saturday, March 22, 2008
Joseph K from Reno, NV
I was rather skeptical buying this at first with its claims of being able to take on the iPod. Rather tough competition there but the Zen manages to do just that. Music, pictures, videos: the Zen does it all! I'm very happy with the performance of such a small device, and the battery life lasts for quite a while given the rather large-scale screen as well as how bright it is. Very good buy and very much worth the money. The control button is a little strange, having you turn the volume up or down instead of forwarding to the next song but you soon get a feel for it. Too much song skipping resulted in an operational freeze, but a great device nonetheless. Highly recommended!

5 of 5 Amazing ! Friday, March 21, 2008
A Customer from New York
One of the best mp3 players I ever had and I had them all: iPods, Zune, Archos... Audio quality is just amazing and if you don't like it, you can play with equalizer. Video quality is the best I've ever seen. iPod video quality is the worst, Zune is better, and Zen is just superb! Small, bright, easy to use, worth every penny.

3 of 5 Do Not Purchase thi at ALL Thursday, March 20, 2008
diwolfe from delaware
After my second week of having it the player kept resetting itself, having to rebuild the library and constantly I would have to poke a pin into it to reset it and I would lose almost all my data each reset and had to constantly re-add all my music, I spent 3 hours uploading CD's for nothing. If you want a GOOD Mp3 Player get either a iPod or a Zune, I have had mine for 4 months and you can't seperate it from mine and a brand new one at the store. I only use this MP3 Player when I am going somewhere like camping or staying at a friends house (incase they steal it, but honestly I dont care if someone did)

4 of 5 Just a couple things Wednesday, March 19, 2008
Da Big O from Saint Louis, Missouri
I had the Philips GoGear 2G MP3 player before this and the reason for going to the Zen was due to the hard drive size of 4 GB and the price. Very easy to load using the software provided and the sound is great. My knock on the product is having to reset it a couple of time using a pin (for no apparent reason) and the battery time has not been great since I have to recharge it a lot more than the GoGear. I have yet to take a long flight somewhere using this but I will very soon. Just hope it does not conk out on me while flying. I own a Motorola RAZR that uses the smaller USB charger so I only have to bring one charger to recharge both products (a big plus).

5 of 5 Time to ditch the iPod! Monday, March 17, 2008
Uncle Rich from Motor city, USA
Don't be an Apple drone and follow the iPod idiots! This Zen smokes the apple equivalent. The intuitive interface, easy to use software and long battery life make it the easy choice. Converting video/movies and placing them on the device is a snap. Watching movies on its brilliant screen is great. It works with all major music formats. Make the intelligent choice -- ditched the iPod!
