Brother HL-4040CN Network-Ready Color Laser Printer

The Brother 4040 prints faster than my previous Konica/Minlolta. However (and it's a big "however") -- as another review stated -- the colors are very inaccurate and not very saturated either, even when I ramp up the "saturation" controls. When I select "red" on my desktop publishing software, the Brother "red" is very orange tinted. The green has a lot of blue in it. And yes, I did run the calibration function. I did not experience this problem with my Konica/Minolta (what I saw on the screen, was what printed on the page). As another review stated, this printer has to be set on "vivid" for the colors to be even close. I got mine when they were on sale for $199.00 so I can't complain too much. But when the toner cartridges run out, I will not replace it with "another Brother." If color accuracy is not a top priority for you, this is a good printer for the money. If it is, I would recommend trying a different brand.

I needed a quality color laser for my home network. Works great out of Windows & Linux. Quality of printing is fantastic! The pages are slightly curled, which I curl them the opposite way and they are perfect.

I ordered the printer on 12/2/08 with free standard shipping. Got it on 12/4/08. Blazing FAST. Thanks Buy.com. STICK TO FEDEX. UPS is slow slow slow. About the printer: Good printer for the price. Setup simple and painless. Fast enough unless you print thousands of pages a day. Colors are very inaccurate. The only mode that seems close to screen colors is "Vivid". Compared against the 3 computer monitors I have at home. Edges of text and graphics not as clean and sharp but you will only notice that if you are looking for it. I guess I am spoiled because until it broke recently I was using a Dell 5100cn. That was $1000 printer. The Brother HL4040CN is a $200 printer. Considering the price difference the HL-4040CN is a incredibly good value as far as cost of the printer goes. The toner life and running costs remain to be seen. I used to change toner in the old Dell once a year. I don't expect this one to perform anything close to that but it is supposed to be the lowest in terms of per page cost for entry level color lasers. Let's see.

Although it took a few minutes to figure out the admin password for the management page, the network, driver and general setup was easy and painless. The print speed is plenty adequate for home use in both the black/white and color modes. Documents look fantastic, but I'm not sure it could do "frame ready" photos without special paper. (For mock ups it's excellent though.) It's sort of noisy when it's printing, but there are none of the fan noises or toner smells you might associate with other laser printers. For the price I'm very satisfied.

Ok, so about 5 years ago I purchased my black and white laser printer for about $500. Now I can get a full color laser printer for a sale price of $267! Wow! Even more a value when you consider that the combined price of the three color laser cartridges and 1 black cartridge together is $151! Almost worth buying a new printer when the cartridges run out! But seriously, most laser printers come with sample cartridges; this one comes with completely filled "standard" cartridges (although high capacity cartridges are also available.) This versions' value is even greater for those running a home network or office network. It can be completely configured over the network, never having been attached to a computer. It does also have a USB jack for connection to a single PC. Either way, be sure to have an extra network cable or USB A-B cable available, as it doesn't ship with connection cables.

I did a lot of research when it came time to upgrade my mono laser, Lexmark Optra R. I was tired of spending $50 a pop to replace ink cartridges on my HP PSC2410. Granted it is a good printer and does a great job at photos but the cost of ink is a crime. Enter the decision to go color laser. I've got two elementary aged kids and with their reports and projects it made sense to buy a color laser. Well for the price I paid for the inkjet I got the Brother HL-4040CN ($266 shipped at Buy.com). Great Choice! This printer is excellent. It does a fine job printing both color and black and white. It even does an ok job printing pictures at the 2400dpi resolution. Not as good as an inkjet will ever be but good enough for reports and projects. The printer is extremely fast, is silent when not printing and not overly loud when printing. I plugged it into my wireless access point and away it went. Easy as 1-2-3. Paper take up from tray or manual feed is flawless. About the only drawback is the size. It is not a small printer by any stretch although in retrospece it is a bit smaller than my old Lexmark Optra R. It still takes up a bit of real estate but I recognize this is a small workgroup printer not a small desktop printer. The only other thing is that the on/off switch is on the main control panel cluster. Making it easy to inadvertantly shut the printer off when using other keys. A separate on/off button on the side would have been better as you normally leave the printer on anyway so ease of access isn't an issue. The other is that to get the duplex model costs almost twice as much. What's up with that? Guess you have to make margin somewhere! Even if I had paid $100 more, I'd still be ecstatic with this printer. At $260 it is a downright steal! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I've had the printer for a few weeks now and have had time to evaluate it. Works with both my MAC and my Windows computers flawlessly. I use XP on the Windows and leopard on the MACs. My wife is doing a scrap book on the MAC and it really is head and shoulders above an ink jet printer. Easy installation. It found all computers on the network. I did not have to assign IP addresses, even for the windows products. It is slower than my Black and white laser printer which is also a brother. It takes a little bit to warm up as well, but if you are not in a big hurry its fine. If you need a lot of speed do not buy this. I normally only use it for 8x11, but sometimes I use it for legal. I like the multipurpose tray. It has an extension on it so that your whole page or evelope has support, and does not just hang over until the printer kicks in. I have found brother printers overall to be reliable, and not expensive to operate. The cartridges are normally reasonable to buy. This printer is great for home or small business use. For the price I have not seen anything better and I did a lot of research. I gave it a 4 for performance because of speed.

The installation instructions & procedures were clear & precise. I connected it to my wireless network and installed it to my laptop & desktop computers in a matter of minutes. The color & speed are excellent. Best printer buy I've made in years.

I bought this printer for our home network. This printer does give crisp prints with good black and color. It is noisy when powering up, after that it is relatively quiet. It has a power-saving sleep mode. I maxed it with memory (512 MB PC133 144-pin laptop memory from ebay for $29). Worked fine.

Print quality is excellent and does not deteriorate with light use as ink jet printers do. It's a great value and the software drivers and very good for my iMac. It fits my needs perfectly.
