4 of 5 Great phone. Wednesday, September 17, 2008 A Customer from Emeryville, CA
Setup was relatively simple and straight forward. It was for a gift for my Mom and so far she's got no problems with it. Does what it's suppose to. Pretty good build quality and voice quality is clear as well. It's a bit pricy and wished it had a built-in answering machine for the price they are charging. Other than that, it works great. 5 of 5 Great phone - very pleased Thursday, September 04, 2008 mister_g60 from Charlottesville, VA
I've had this phone for about two and a half months now and I'm quite pleased with it. It's a little pricey, but if you have Skype you're saving so much each month on your phone service that the price of the phone almost doesn't matter.
At first I was a little frustrated that the volume didn't get any higher on the handset, but either I got used to it or it magically fixed itself, because I no longer have this complaint (I'm sure it depends on who I'm talking to at the time, too).
A couple of weeks ago I had some annoying reliability issues. Calls weren't coming through or connecting when I tried dialing out and it was just unreliable and rather disfunctional in general. That, however, was either a Skype or Comcast issue I'm quite sure, and over the last week the phone has worked flawlessly - not a single issue to speak of.
I agree with the reviewer below that the menus can be a little slow. I found, at least for call history, that if you clear it out it really speeds up. I don't know about you, but I almost never have a need to review call history that goes back more than a week at most.
I'm telling all my friends to get the Philips VOIP8411 and Skype - it's such a great combination! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good, but not great Monday, August 18, 2008 Nicholas.Sterling from Cedar Park, TX
Hmmm -- most reviewers seems to love this thing. I am using it, and it works, but there are some things I don't like. My internet connection is (nominally) 7-Mbit cable.
1. There are occasional pops and gaps in the voice. Most of the time, the call quality is very good, but there are occasional lapses.
2. I have tried using it with my company's conference-call provider (AT&T), and for some reason it causes a lot of static for the other listeners. I had to switch to another phone!
3. Deleting voicemail is painfully slow. After listening to the message, you'd think you'd press a Delete button and that would be the end of it. But no, you press Options and another menu comes up. You scroll to Delete and select that. It deletes the message and puts up a screen saying Message Deleted! (or something like that) for 3 seconds, during which you can do nothing else. So what I think should be a trivial one-second affair takes about 10 seconds and some concentration.
4. Use of the button with automated systems seems a little touchy -- I now hold down each key for a moment rather than just pressing them in rapid succession.
I am currently using a measured rate line ($17/month) from AT&T as my house phone and then this Skype phone for long distance. I'm not sure the quality is good enough for that long term, though.

5 of 5 Voip without a PC Monday, July 28, 2008 dorky from Portland, Oregon
I bought this for my freshman daughter for college. No need to get a regular phone line in her dorm room, now I can just plug this into the Ethernet connection in the room and she has (nearly) free calls to anyone!
I normally avoid Philips products, but took a chance on this unit and it's impressive. The handset has nice looks and everything seems to work well. Was this review helpful?

3 of 5 Product is just okay Wednesday, June 04, 2008 A Customer from pembroke pines, FL
Enough had already been said about the phone...
just wanted to list a few negatives :
if on speaker phone, it echoes a bit,
the headphones it supports are not the traditional 3.5mm ones but 2.5mm,
the menu options are lil slow..
sometime its getting struck..
sometimes the volume increase and decrease has no impact

5 of 5 Great product Wednesday, April 16, 2008 Jay from Tucson, AZ
Although it's a little bit higher for the product expense, it will come back quickly. Now with this one for several weeks it works well so far and I am going to change my cell phone 600 mins to prepaid card (600 vs 100 per year) I have used less than 100 mins now. Moreover, it has much weaker EM waves and is more healthy. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 breath of fresh air Monday, March 10, 2008 floyd wilson from saratoga spgs ny
i have known about skpye/voip services for number of years but finally took the plunge after throwing away hard earned money for phone service i hardly used. as for the product, the pricing was very reasonable for this unit, the unit is sleek, very compact, easy to use,up in running in minutes. i did a thorough price/performance comparison and this unit has yet to dissappoint. if you wanna save some money every month this is the way to go,jump in and in a few months the unit will pay for itself and you will have a little money to spend elswhere, highly recommended!!!! 4 of 5 More features form firmware Saturday, December 01, 2007 Michael from New Rochelle, NY
The phone is very good. I have had the phone now for about 3 months and I have not experienced a lot of problems. I wish that phillips or skype would upgrade the firmware to fix some slight annoiences about the unit. Other than than it is a good buy if one is considering a VOIP phone solution. 5 of 5 Exactly what I needed Wednesday, November 28, 2007 Mike B from Bellevue, NE
I bought this phone because I had problems with running my old Skype phone on Vista. I liked it because I did not need to connect it to my PC at all. It connects directly to my router and allows me to make calls to my friend in Russia without messing with the PC or even having it on. The sound quality is great even across the ocean. My only complaint is it occasionally loses connection and I have to turn off the phone and turn it back on again to get the connection back. It would be great if it had a reset function to reaquire a connection. It is a little pricey, but worth it for the functionality. Overall, I am very happy with this phone. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Overall, I'm satisfied with this phone Tuesday, November 27, 2007 A Customer from Houston, Texas
I have owned this phone for about 2 1/2 months. This phone is very easy to set up. The sound quality is very good provided that you remain within range of the base. Both parties should also have a good broadband connection. This is perfectly understandable. My phone was received with the latest firmware version already installed. I had to “reboot” this phone only once since installing it. It became stuck on “system is starting” and I was unable to sign-in. I believe this was caused by a software update from Skype. A simple reboot resolved this issue. I find it much easier to configure some of this phone’s settings from a browser window rather than using the phone’s buttons. It is also much simpler to add contacts via the Skype application on the computer. The one drawback to this phone is the ringer volume. It is not loud enough. If you live in a multi-story or a large house, you need to consider adding more handsets. Overall, I consider that the quality of this phone is very good, and I have recommended it to friends that already use Skype.
I wish that I could convey the same positive remarks regarding Skype support. I would advise readers to visit the Skype Forums and thoroughly understand the issues involved with some of the Skype services. As of this writing, I personally consider that Skype Customer service is very lacking. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great alternative to vonage, cable and other voip Thursday, October 18, 2007 Carlosglz from Santa Monica, CA
I set this phone up for my mom, I didn't want to get rid of her standard landline for a variety of reasons but I did want her to have a phone she could use to get unlimited domestic long distance and cheap international rates. Plus I wanted to avoid the inefficiency of having to keep a pc turned on at all times (like many of the usb based skype phones).
This phone worked out great! It hooks up straight to the lan, requires no pc, and all you type in is your skype username and password. I have her setup with the $29.95 per year unlimited skype out plan, which is great and our international calls are only a few cents per minute, some to europe are even free, and calls to other skype users are free no matter where they are. I don't have a skype-in number setup for her, because as I mentioned she still has the landline, but if skype accepted number portability transfers, I would transfer her number to skype! Great product and I highly recommend it for most purposes... if you are worried about 9-11 dialing, power outages and internet outages, then keep your landline for now, but don't use it to make long-distance calls, as a matter of fact, remove the ability to make any calls that cost anything from the landline all together, that way you know when you should be using the skype phone. 5 of 5 A nice addition to my phone line Tuesday, September 04, 2007 A Customer from Cincinnati, OH
I got this sort of late in my Skype unlimited subscription. I rarely used the subscription but since putting the VOIP841 on line, I use skype all the time.
One nice feature is the ability to plug ones phone line into the box. I have a voip line merged together via an ATA that has a gizmoproject line configured. I take the wire leading to my cordless phone to the Philips box and voila I have access to 3 lines - skype, voip provider, and gizmoproject. Very cool. If I am on skype and a call comes in from the other lines, call waiting beeps in and I see who is calling.
Another nice feature is that the phone is not attached to the box. You can put the phone anywhere in your house.
On the wish list: I wish the phone had a jack to add a headset with microphone. I also wish the phone had a longer Caller ID Name view. It seems the caller id is limited to 10 letters. This could be modified by a software upgrade.
All in all, I really love this new gadget. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 The best voice quality skype phone and not comput Sunday, August 12, 2007 A Customer from Chicago, IL
Every one who I call enjoys clear voice quality. No Interference with home wireless since it uses DECT. Nice thing I like about it was very easy to setup in less than 10 min. Great thing about this phone is that it is 2 in 1 one so you get skype in and out call as well as land line call. Great thing about Philips phone is I don't have to start computer or use tangled cord usb phone required. I have recommend to my friend and they like it. Was this review helpful?
