Canon Digital Ixus 850 IS / SD800 Review
By: tech.co.uk staff - techradar.com Reviews
Published on: 4/11/2007 10:16 AM
The current crop of models in Canon's Ixus range may look very similar, but they aren't all created equal. Take the 850 IS, for example... it has all the good looks of its stable mates but comes with a 7-megapixel sensor and a generously wide angle lens...read the full review

5 of 5 SD800 IS is a top pick Wednesday, July 30, 2008
Satisfied Customer from Boston, MA

I have bought 14 of these cameras for use at work and at home and love the quality, versatility, ease of use, and especially the wide angle (28-105mm) lens. In two years of use on construction sites, not one problem, and the cameras come back in pretty banged up. It date stamps on the photo (if you need that), does very well in low light (ISO 1600), the wide angle allows whole room shots without standing 20 feet away, has image stabilization, face recognition, and does very good video. I'll be buying more of them!

5 of 5 Canon PowerShot SD800IS Digital Camera Wednesday, November 28, 2007
A Customer from Sacramento, California
I love the Canon PowerShot SD800IS, my first digital camera. It is everything the reviews said it was. It is easy to use and takes great pictures. The User Guides (one for easy set-up, one for detailed use) are well-written and easy to follow. And the buying experience on Buy.com was great as well!

5 of 5 Nice little camera Wednesday, November 28, 2007
A Customer from Fair Haven, New Jersey
Have a Nikon SLR with big zoom that I am tired of dragging around on trips. Bought the Canon SD 800IS over the newer models because I liked the combo of the wider wide angle (28mm) on the 800IS its viewfinder and image stabilization. Price has come done because of newer models that lack the above combo. Camera works great and pics are quite good. While basically a point and shoot, but one must still think about the picture setting. For example, in bright background settings with subject in shade must use exposure lock so subject is not underexposed. But this is to be expected with any auto settings. Flash does not have power of my Nikon speedlight, or all the fatures of an SLR, so you sacrifice features of SLR rig for size and weight convenience. For a pocket camera, this one is really neat and will provide great photos.

5 of 5 Great camera, reasonble price Tuesday, July 03, 2007
eric from new york
the SD800IS is a stylish camera that takes great pictures. the image stability technology is amazing- it takes crystal clear pictures (i can read text off of a book) even when i shake the camera vigorously. The controls for the manual mode take a little while to get used to, but they're more or less intuitive. Playing around with things like the ISO, color balance, macro shots, toggling face detection, and the scenes feature will help you get a better feel for the camera. Overall, the camera offers exception picture quality for a reasonable price.

4 of 5 Match The Camera To Your Usage Friday, June 22, 2007
Jason B. from Harrisburg, PA
For me, I wanted a camera that complemented my primary camera (ultra zoom). In addition, the vast majority of my photos are put on a web site at the low resolution of 640x480. I do print some of my favorites for the wall or family, but not all the time. I also wanted a camera that was pocketable, ready to go every day, unlike the bulky zoom camera. And I want a camera I can take to evening social events. I wanted the wide angle because my ultra zoom doesn't provide this. <br /><br /> On most of these counts, the camera delivers. It is very easy to use and very portable. The wide angle is fantastic, fun and useful. The photos look good on my web site. <br /><br /> The issues I have are that, as is usually the case with a small camera, red eye is very prevalent, making it a bit of a chore if I want to put lots of photos of my friends and family on my web site after an event that required flash. While noise isn't bad, especially when using it on a web site, it is noticeable if you view the image at full resolution on your computer, or if you print large enough prints. As for the fun factor... the screen makes it seem like the photos you're about to take are terrible. But then you take them and they actually look pretty good. Strange effect. I also miss the zoom sometimes, but because of the high resolution, I can usually crop and still use the photo on the web. <br /><br /> Overall I'm glad I purchased this camera, because I've been taking lots of spontaneous photos that look good. The camera is fast, fun and reliable. I haven't had to change out the battery yet (150+ photos).

5 of 5 My best PowerShot camera yet!! Tuesday, June 12, 2007
A Customer from Seattle, WA
I've owned a Powershot S400 and S410 previously and find my new Powershot SD800 IS camera is the best yet. The larger LCD on the back of the camera makes framing a shot effortless. There are easy to understand icons and "visual aids" that pop up on top of the image within the LCD to make sure you know what settings (like automatic flash or no flash) are selected. The battery is smaller than my previous Powershot cameras and the battery charger is smaller as well (now I'm more likely to take it with me on trips). Overall, this camera is smaller, faster, and easier to use than my previous cameras. It is a joy to use and the picture quality is excellent!

A Customer from San Antonio, TX
I bought it for my wife, she is very happy with the gift. She is not into photography, neither I am, and this little thing let non professional people like us take good pictures under different modes.

5 of 5 Great Camera! With movie caveat. Friday, June 08, 2007
Lynx from Cville VA
All the good things written about this camera apply. Still learning to use some of the settings to best effect. Feels wonderful to the touch, I can carry it with me easily. Bought it primarily because I wanted something to take crisp closeup movies for short educational videos. The image stabilization (which does not appear to be an optional feature in horizontal mode) means the movies are slightly jerky if you pan slowly from one side to the other. Image stabilization works great for photos but interferes with video. I still love it.

5 of 5 I LOVE IT! Wednesday, May 30, 2007
A Customer from LA, CA
I'm surprised at how fast this came in the mail even with Budget Shipping. And when I opened it, I was nothing but surprised at how compact and nice it looks. The camera itself is amazing and takes great pictures. I got everything I was looking for in such a little camera. This is perfect for me since I travel so much and hate lugging along the bigger cameras.

4 of 5 Everything's great except the Flash Friday, May 25, 2007
rawlogic from Cincinnati, OH
If you are going to be taking pictures indoors or anywhere where the light is anything but bright, this is not the camera for you. The flash is too small and weak. The flash is only big and strong enough to provide minor fill to remove some minor shadows on your center subjects. If you take pictures where it's not very bright, only the very front surface of your subject is lit and your people will have red eyes no matter how close you are to them. Look at the flash on the photo of the camera, and you'll see that it's way too small to provide adequate fill. Great camera for outdoor use or with all of the lights on. The controls are intuitive--has some great manual settings. Very easy to use. Watch out for the face detection. I've already had an instance where it focused on a face in the background instead of the face in the foreground because both faces were near the center. I'm going to turn the face detection off and keep it on spot metering mode so I can better control it and I don't lose some great candid moments due to out-of focus subjects.

5 of 5 Great Camera! Monday, May 07, 2007
Christina from Davis, California
I'm not a "techie" but I have to admit this camera gives me results like one! The folks at work complimented me on the "professional" pictures I took. I didn't change any settings, and I was feeling too impatient to read all of the manual info., and so I just started clicking away. The other reviews were totally true! Nice little camera for the price, and it's really handy to use the little mini-reader with the 2GB card I bought (in addition to the one that comes with the camera). The only drawback to the camera is that it's not for folks with big fingers; that, and the fact that it doesn't come with a case, and that's about all I can find to add to the "con" list. I'm also a penny-pincher, and this was a really good deal! www.buy.com has nice stuff for great prices! The little adds in the paper advertise cameras with half the buzzers and whistles for the prices www.buy.com has for the really nice ones. This is the place! :) I'll be back.

5 of 5 Just what we wanted Friday, January 12, 2007
A Customer from Weston, CT
I got this for my wife as a late Xmas present. She wanted something easier to carry with a bigger LCD screen than our old camera. I liked the Image Stabilization feature and the 7.1MP. I bought a fast (130x) 2GB card to go with the camera. It came quickly and was just as advertised. While it has LOTS of complicated features (which because we're not photography experts we are not likely to use much) it is very easy to just turn on, put in AUTO mode and start taking pictures. The wide-angle feature is really nice. With the battery, recharger and camera this set takes up 1/3 the space of our previous camera. Everything about it so far has been great - no complaints.

4 of 5 Nice camera Thursday, October 26, 2006
vinay from Atlanta, GA
I have been quiet satisfied with canon digital cameras. I was amazed that face recognition worked even in photographs. User friendly menus. I have bought it just a couple of week backs and so far its been upto my expectations. Its high time canon should think about shipping something more then a 16MB memory for a higher mega pixel camera.
