1 of 5 DO NOT BUY FROM ELECTRONIC PALACE...piece of CRAP! Tuesday, December 01, 2009
S from CA

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM FROM ELECTRONIC PALACE!!! I did and i regret it...the item had no serial number, it was blacked out. The DVD player makes a loud banging noise when loading the DVD. The player freezes every 15-30 minutes playing a DVD and has to manually be trued off and back on...for then to 30 minutes later freeze again...A PIECE OF TRASH!! belongs in the garbage. AGAIN, DO NOT BUY FROM ELECTRONIC PALACE DO NOT BUY FROM ELECTRONIC PALACE!!!

5 of 5 Awesome machine Wednesday, March 11, 2009
Bob from Palatine, IL
This is no ordinary DVD player. It's so awesome to be able to put any dvd with divx files on it into this player. Also, IMPORTANT you can absolutely put your divx files onto a usb stick and play easily (the instructions say you can't, but they've upgraded the firmware or?).

5 of 5 No real complaints here! Thursday, December 11, 2008
Josh from Louisville, KY
I bought this product in October, 2007 and it has been working perfectly for 14 months now. My original plan was to plug a 500GB external hard drive into it to play my Xvid files. This would have worked if the drive was formatted with FAT32, but who formats a 500GB HD with FAT32? It will not recognize NTFS, but neither will the majority of the devices out there that read USB drives (including my XBox 360), so I'm can't be mad about this. Phillips makes no claims that it will support anything but a USB flash drive. It does do a great job playing Xvid and Divx files. The 1080i/720p up-conversion is a must if you have a high def television. If you don't, you should assume your next television will be. As for the other reviews... Yes, the tray takes forever to eject, but I wouldn't lower my rating over it. The menu is not more difficult than my Sony or my Memorex player, but all three of them could be better. There are currently only a handful of receivers that will pass video to your TV via HDMI, or TV's that will pass 5.1/7.1 digital audio back to your receiver, so it is very likely you will have to run a separate digital coax for audio and HDMI cable for video if you want surround sound. And… H.264 would be very nice, but it has a long way to go to be as widely supported as Divx. Maybe that will be part of next year’s model! Final conclusion… I plan on buying another to give to a family member for Christmas, which is why I’m looking at this page as we speak. Hope this helps you decide!

1 of 5 annoying interface Friday, July 18, 2008
A Customer from md
there is no open button on the remote to open the dvd tray. It takes forever to open the tray too, after pressing the open button on the unit. Have to aim the remote exactly at the unit to make it work. Makes for an annoying experience. Cheaper no-brand units have fared better than this

5 of 5 Had to have another Sunday, April 06, 2008
Rick J. Stohler from Hummelstown, PA
This player is great. Just does what it is supposed to do. All I want out of my electronic devices is for them to perform when I use them. The Philips does this 100% of the time. This is the 2nd one I bought and they both perform like they are supposed to.

4 of 5 Good player for the price Monday, March 24, 2008
A Customer from Chicago, IL
So far I have been mostly happy with this player. The only thing I don't like about this player is that, if I pause it for 10 mins or so to go do something and when I came back, the player turns off automatically and then I have to start everything from the beginning again. One person below mentioned that it does not have a button to advance normally. That is not true. The right arrow is used to advance normally from 2x to 16x.

5 of 5 Great player for the price Saturday, February 16, 2008
A Customer from Tacoma, WA
I upgraded from the DVP5140 to get the USB capability, which is neat. With a flash drive or external USB drive, I no longer need to burn DVD's. The DVP 5960 also seems to handle some DiVx copies better than my older player.

4 of 5 Plays XVID flawlessly...interface is ok i guess Tuesday, February 05, 2008
Fair and Balanced Critic from Washington, DC
I was worried when the product literature never mentioned XVID when I opened it up. It plays XVID so I can play all my downloaded videos without having to convert to DIVX/VCD/MP4/WMV/DVD. I can't scroll back up in a folder...so lets' say I want to play episode 1 of fraggle rock after scrolling to episode 5...I have to pretty much switch to setup or some other screen to get the folder to take me back to one on the folder screen. Now you can always click "previous" button while watching...but I'd prefer a better menu. It does what it says...and It's cheap...I still would buy it again.

5 of 5 Good product and reliable service Wednesday, January 09, 2008
A Customer from Silver Spring, MD
Well after my Samsung upconverting DVD Recorder stopped working (just under 12 months), I decided to get a new upconverting DVD player. Based on the reviews, I chose this product. As usual, ordering was very easy and the DVD player was deliverd early. Connecting it up to my HDTV via the HDMI cable was simple and everything worked!

4 of 5 Philips DVP5960 HDMI DVD player Monday, January 07, 2008
A Customer from Fairfax, VA
Was a little bit difficult to set up as I used the HDMI output to my HD TV. Finally got it to work and the video is great. I connected the Audio to my receiver via optics and that also worked fine. Was frustrated that the HDMI could not be connected through the receiver to strip off the audio then to the HD TV but the setup I now have works fine. Excellent video quality. Control lacks the ability to jump to the next chapter.

3 of 5 Good Value, lacks features Thursday, December 27, 2007
A Customer from Vienna, VA
Good picture. Plays all kinds of formats, but lacks features common on other players. The remote only has a skip bottom and does not let you advance normally. The player does not remember where you were on the DVD when you power off. Since there is no normal advance if you turn off the player in the middle of a DVD you can only restart at the beginning of a chapter mark.

5 of 5 Plays It All Thursday, December 20, 2007
A Customer from Mpls, MN
I've been using this for about a year and it works great. Only complaint is, it's not USB 2.0 and FAT 32 doesn't support long filenames. Some firmware mods add to the usefulness and appearance.

4 of 5 Noisy but does what it is supposed to do Monday, December 03, 2007
KC from NY
The USB connection plus its ability to play avi files are really great. It looks good but the cd tray is kind of filmsy/fragile. Slow pick up plus quite noisy when starting up. I haven't read the menu and encountered the issue that the files are not played in alphabetical order. Perhaps the files are being played based on the order of when the files are copied. Will have to spend some more time to look into this. It has HDMI, coaxial connection & composite connection. I guess I can't ask for too much though I would like to see s-video and optical toslink included but they're not.

4 of 5 Compared to previous Philips 642 model divX Tuesday, November 27, 2007
A Customer from San Bernardino, California
Much improved divX movie playback (DVD movie playback is fine but not reviewed here). Subtitles now detected automatically. My 37" LCD screen can now be filled with divX movie. Movies that gave trouble on 642 now display fine. Philips 642 could go directly to any time in a movie, however, and new Philips 5960 cannot---have to wait while fast forward to 50 min spot, for example. Cannot backup less than about 45 sec; if you miss a word, not easy to rehear it. Doesn't decode the increasingly popular H.264 movie format, only handles divX I think. Overall, at same price as Philips 642 two years ago, the 5960 is clearly superior.

5 of 5 A definite for your "Gotta Have It" List Monday, August 13, 2007
Tym B. Wulf from Hot Springs,AR
This DVD player is undoubtedly the best buy I have made in a long time. It plays virtually any format of disc I have put in it,not to mention any brand of cdr or dvd. At first glance the menu looks intimidating, but once you get to navigating in it,it is very easy. The only reason I didn't give it a perfect rating was the first impression of the menu. That aside, THIS PRODUCT TOTALLY ROCKS!!!! :)

5 of 5 Great player Monday, August 13, 2007
A Customer from Columbus OH
Have had it for about two months and everything is great. Picture quality on my DVD's is a little better than before, but not a big enough difference to replace another player. Haven't gotten to use the USB or anything yet, but hope to soon. Great choice if you need a new DVD player anyway and price was fantastic.

5 of 5 Solid DVD player Tuesday, June 12, 2007
Collin from Suisun City, CA
I've been very happy with the player so far. The only quibble is when I view pictures from USB, they are slow to display. I haven't burned to CD to see if it's faster from disk. But other than that, the picture quality is great, setup was quick, and it's a good value. Even updating the firmware was easy, just download from their website, burn to disc and pop the disc into the player.

5 of 5 the best dvd player ive found withen a good price Tuesday, October 17, 2006
A Customer from ca, riverside
it is a great product overall! although i had some problems with the usb port in the front with my external hdd. however im not sure that is suppose to work or not, so it doesnt really matter. the divx playback is the most useful. i can burn avi files directly onto a dvd without converting to vcd format. love that! the hdmi cables quality is awsome, crisp pictures on my 55 inch widescreen hi-def sony tv. the controls are easy to use and portable. although the eject button is not on it, the function itself is press and hold the stop button. which i though is kinda cool cuz i had to read the manual to find out about it. but overall, its a great player.

5 of 5 This Gear works Well Wednesday, September 20, 2006
Steve from Dale City, Virginia
The Philips USA DVP5960 Hi-Def Conversion DivX DVD Player with HDMI and USB - DVP5960/37 works very well with my Philips 37" LCD HDTV. Plug the, Not Included :( , HDMI cable into one of the two ports on the TV and run a Digital Coax between the TV and AMP and experience Digital Audio along with HD Digital Video. The unit plays all of my compressed video and audio files flawlessly. I am very impressed with the reduced size as well; the width is standard but the depth is about half that of it predisessors. An all around good deal.

5 of 5 better than the dvp642 Tuesday, August 29, 2006
soliscardenas from Union city
This baby will play anything you burn in your computer: movies, videos, music, photos you name it its awesome and if you plugged to your HDTV with a hdmi cable your movies will look like almost 3-D, just press a button on the unit and your movie files will get a makeover you wont believe, usb port on the front comes very handy when you are in a hurry, plug in your usb flash drive and you are set, you can even plug in your hard drive if it is properly formatted FAT32.
