5 of 5 Iogear, USB/Firewire Combo Hub/GUH420 Saturday, January 03, 2009
Cam from Saginaw, MI

I am writing this from a mac users point of view (a G4 Power PC laptop 1.33 GHz running Mac OSX 10.5 First of all the good news, it works great! Looks great and I would buy one again without hesitation. However, remember as a net gain you have one extra firewire and three usb's. The bad news, well for me there isn't any!

5 of 5 Handy little Hub Wednesday, March 12, 2008
A Customer from AR
Whata great little device! I needed two IEEE 1394 (Firewire) connections and one required power (Canopus ADVC 110), plus could use some extra USB connections. Tried this nifty gadget an am very impressed. Daisy chained an external harddrive and the Canopus ADVC and it works well (as long as you don't try to capture from the ADVC to the EHD) Now I also have a handy, on the top of my desk, access to a USB and a IEEE connection. The base for this gadget could be better, it isn't very stable, hence the 4 on ease of use. Great device, love it.

A Customer from San Luis Obispo, CA
The Firewire half of my hub was non-functional out of the box. Buy.com accepted the return with no hassle. Would not recommend.

4 of 5 What "a customer" says is almost true Monday, September 19, 2005
Josh Locker from Rochester, NY
While "a customer" is almost right, a point of clarification: Technically, the hub allows the use of four USB devices and two Firewire device. The reason for the difference is that USB has a dedicated upstream port that isn't counted in the number of ports (4 ports = 4 downstream + 1 upstream), while Firewire has no such dedicated ports (3 ports = 3 ports). There is a reason for this that I won't go into here. So none of the 4 USB ports are occupied when plugging it into the computer, while one of the firewire ports is. Subtract the use of the ports on the computer, and your net gain is 3 USB devices and only one Firewire device. That's how those hubs usually function separately, so it's not like IOGear is making it sound better than it is. You just have to remember that you can't plug three peripherals into the three Firewire ports.

So the intention was correct, but the details weren't quite right.

That said, I own one of these and it works quite well. I can't say that it's any better than any other USB or Firewire hubs, but it's nice that it's all in one device. And it doesn't look bad either. Not shown in the picture are one of each port on the front of the device, angled upward. The USB one is nice for USB flash drives, but I think it would be better to put two USB ports up there and have all the Firewire ports on the back, since there aren't many Firewire devices that are often swapped, like flash drives.

4 of 5 Deceptive Labeling Thursday, March 24, 2005
A Customer from Cincinnati, Ohio
This hub is labeled as having 4 USB ports and 3 FireWire ports and that is, strictly speaking correct. It does have that many ports. However, one of each port is used to connect it to the computer. In reality it is a 3 port USB, 2 port FireWire hub. Since this isn't the first hub I've bought, I wasn't surprised and got what I expected. But a newbie is likely to be unhappy.
