Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel: Rahzel (vocals). | | Audio Mixers: Fred Maher; Crystal Method. | | Audio Remixers: Martin Buttrich; Romell Regulacion; Timo Maas. | | Like the first disc in the series, the second volume of Pure Techno is more like "Random Dance Music," with no particular focus on any one style. Crystal Method's "Acetone," Lords of Acid's "Rubber Doll," Underworld's "Jumbo," Sander Van Doorn's "Punk'd," multiple tracks from Information Society, and Moby's "We Are All Made of Stars" (which appeared in the same label's Pure Trance series!) are very different from one another, going to show that the compilation is a lot more diverse than its title would indicate. Most of the tracks are edited in order to allow space -- a scheme that only benefits marketing. "16 More Hi-Tech Hits from the Masters" carries a lot more weight than "10 More Hi-Tech Hits from the Masters," but the edits can be very irritating for those who want to hear the full versions. ~ Andy Kellman | | What makes this particular collection of techno singles, album tracks, and remixes noteworthy isn't so much the recent stuff as the old material that has been reclaimed by the techno crowd. Alongside typical compilation fodder from the likes of Moby (whose "We Are All Made of Stars" stands up quite well on the 100th hearing, and is nicely remixed here by Timo Maas) and Lords of Acid (who contribute the more run-of-the-mill "Rubber Doll"), there's a remix of Missing Persons' "Walking in L.A." that features an appearance by Cypress Hill's Sen Dog, and, for those of you who really can't get enough of that 1980s vibe, there are two entries from Information Society: "Going Going Gone" (remixed by darkwave stalwarts Razed in Black) and "Are 'Friends' Electric?" (featuring guest vocals by none other than Gary Numan). The combination of vintage electro and up-to-the-minute techno is lots of fun, and if the younger crowd sometimes fails to uphold the standards of the old school (Sander Van Doorn's "Punk'd" is especially tiresome), there's still enough top-notch material here to make this collection worth the money. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson | Producer: Fred Maher; Jeff Hypp; Martin Buttrich; Mike Koglin; Oliver Adams; Praga Khan; Romell Regulacion; Talla 2XLC; The Crystal Method; Timo Maas; Tune-In; Gez Dewar; Rick Smith |
