The crimes aren't what make this mystery-driven series so much fun. Instead, it's the chemistry between leads James Roday (DUKES OF HAZZARD) and Dulé Hill (THE WEST WING) that has PSYCH following in the footsteps of series such as MONK and MAGNUM, P.I. With a family of cops, Shawn Spencer (Roday) has honed his observational skills to an impressive degree. But rather than join the police force and make his father (Corbin Bernsen, L.A. LAW) proud, Shawn bounces from job to job, working as everything from a foot model to a Wienermobile driver. But he can't keep his powers of deduction hidden, and he calls the police with tips for their cases. When his knowledge arouses suspicion, Shawn does the logical thing: tells everyone he's a psychic and opens a psychic detective agency. Aided by his best friend and polar opposite, Gus (Hill), Shawn solves cases with the Santa Barbara Police Department. The detective duo matches wits with the doubtful police, hardened criminals, and one another with hilarious results. This release includes every episode of this quirky dramedy's first season.

The perfect chaser to the well-established Monk, the show takes the buddy concept, mixes in equal parts smart writing and authentic character acting, and serves it up in an impressive glass of detective work...The trick to a successful run is going to be the writing. Balancing on the head of a pin, always this close to being unmasked, Shawn and Gus are not charlatans or con men. They're merely keeping up their unfortunate ruse to stay out of trouble and solve real crimes utilizing their true talents and experiences. Franks and his team will have to be vigilant in providing audiences with cases they haven't seen before and avoid repeating themselves with similar plotlines. If the pilot is any indication, it shouldn't be a problem...On the downside, there will be inevitable comparisons to Monk and they're justified. Both shows do have similar looks, feels, and ensemble tones, but there are enough differences to make the series pairing an exceptional block of programming. - Michael Stailey

When I saw the pilot episode of Psych, I was a bit disappointed and didn't like it a whole lot. However, later episodes were much better, and the lead characters Shawn and Gus have great chemistry, with Gus usually the straight man to Shawn's craziness. Though they solve the mysteries, they are not 100% serious. Some of the episodes have the hilarious bonus of audio commentary provided by the two lead actors James Roday and Dule Hill. Great fun! This show has been the best TV find for my wife and me (and all of the family and co-workers we could convince to watch it). It is a show with enough plot twists to keep you on your toes, but is mostly character-driven. The pop-culture references are superb for the 20 to 40-something audience. The acting is fun and loose, the characters feel like real people you would want to meet, and the show never takes itself too seriously. Was this review helpful?
