| Produced By Trevor Horn brings together 25 years work from master producer Trevor Horn. "Video Killed the Radio Star" (incidentally, the first record played on MTV) was Trevor's first hit in 1979 and a rare instance on which he played the role of writer, performer and producer. 2004 is represented by a gorgeous track from Lisa Stansfield's album The Moment, notable as the first time she had used an outside producer in 15 years. In between we have generation defining recording from ABC and Frankie Goes To Hollywood; classic pop twenty years apart from Dollar and t.A.T.u; an unlikely hit for Yes; innovation and invention in the form of "Buffalo Gals"; a timeless dance classic from Grace Jones and a man whose entire career has seen him hand-in-hand with Trevor, Seal. Showing the sheer diversity of his production cannon, we also include alternative rock from The Frames, a beautifully realized Shane McGowan ballad and hugely influential recording from Art of Noise. Here's to the next 25 years...
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | The producer-centered career-overview CD set has a good enough history (as anyone who owns Back to Mono would agree), but it's always nice to see obvious candidates finally get their due, and there's no question that Trevor Horn deserves it. Conceived as a companion to a celebratory concert covering a quarter-century of hits, Produced by Trevor Horn's two discs have an understandable focus on the first ten years of his career, beginning with his epochal hit as part of the Buggles, "Video Killed the Radio Star," in retrospect as simultaneously futuristic and nostalgic as prime Kraftwerk. To say that he helped own the '80s, particularly in Europe but with plenty of American and other worldwide hits, would be an understatement -- among the many numbers featured are ABC's "Poison Arrow" and "The Look of Love," Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" and "Two Tribes," Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart," Seal's "Crazy" and much more besides. Later work was more sporadic in terms of commercial profile but the choices for the compilation are interesting in that light -- work with Kirsty MacColl and, semi-notoriously, Belle & Sebastian goes unmentioned, but efforts for Shane MacGowan "You're the One," a duet with MĀ ire Brennan of Clannad, the Frames, LeAnn Rimes and Lisa Stansfield get a nod, as well as the worldwide monster hit of t.A.T.u.'s "All the Things She Said." | | Sequenced in a non-chronological fashion throughout, Produced by Trevor Horn's great appeal lies in how clearly it prioritizes the sonic continuities throughout his work -- a detailed, "widescreen" production that quite literally sounds sonically rich, even at its calmest, on such lovely and lower-key songs as Dollar's "Give Me Back My Heart," a legendary early hit for Horn that never made it to America. Echo and reverb can suggest vast distances, singers often sound like they have a perfect spotlight focused on them, and while a lot goes on in the songs very little sounds cluttered. But the underrated element in Horn's work is his love of rhythm -- drawing on everything from obsessive industrial/disco punch to hard rock slams to funk and breakbeat experiments (his work with the Art of Noise and even Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Girls" shows how he was quicker on the draw than most of his contemporaries, in the U.K. or elsewhere), he has a better ear than most for how a beat will sound, especially on the radio. Liner notes include brief reflections on each song by Horn as well as a brief biographical overview including more insights from the man himself. ~ Ned Raggett |

| | Bio | | | Trevor Horn Trevor Charles Horn, born July 15, 1949 in Durham, England, is a pop music producer and musician. After playing double bass in big bands and producing little-known artists, Horn had a breakthrough hit when he formed a band called the Buggles and released "Video Killed the Radio Star". The song also appeared on the group's first album, The Age of Plastic, which was released in 1980. Later in the same year Horn and fellow Buggles member Geoff Downes were invited to join the rock group Yes. Horn became the lead vocalist, replacing Jon Anderson. He recorded one album with the band, Drama, on which he also plays bass on one track. However, he left after seven months, at the beginning of 1981, to concentrate on his production work. He also completed a second Buggles album, Adventures In Modern Recording, mainly alone after a falling out with Geoff Downes. Horn did work with Yes again, (co-)producing their next two studio albums, and also went on to be a founder member of The Art of Noise. He is known for performing on albums he produces. Horn achieved his greatest commercial success as a producer in 1984, firstly with the Liverpudlian rock band Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and secondly with the charity group Band Aid and their enormous hit "Do They Know It's Christmas". In the UK, Frankie Goes to Hollywood was the best-selling band of 1984; the success of singles such as "Relax" and "Two Tribes" helped to bankroll ZTT Records, which Horn had co-founded in 1983. "Do They Know It's Christmas" became one of the best-selling singles of all time. He is also most associated with acts like ABC, Grace Jones, Seal and Propaganda, but has also produced Dollar, Tina Turner, Lisa Stansfield, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Pet Shop Boys, Mike Oldfield, Marc Almond, Charlotte Church, t.A.T.u, LeAnn Rimes, and Belle & Sebastian.
