 Editor's Note
Helen Mirren plays tough, chain-smoking London detective Jane Tennison in this highly praised, taut, and sharp-witted mystery program originally produced for PBS. In the first episode, Tennison becomes the first female DCI to lead her own murder investigation. Along the way, stubborn detectives and a hard-to-catch suspect give her more than she bargained for.
 Plot Summary
Actress Helen Mirren won acclaim for her performance as Inspector Jane Tennison in this superb British policier.| After a much-loved detective dies in the course of a murder investigation, Tennison manages to convince her superiors to let her take over the case. The men immediately set out to undermine her authority by withholding information, providing her with false leads and employing a whole host of delaying tactics.| As Tennison struggles to take control of the situation, she learns that her subordinates' rebelliousness isn't the only problem she has to cope with -- there's a wide-spread web of government corruption, too...

| | Professional Reviews | Time Magazine 7 of 10 Rare is a drama that works so well on two levels: as a crackling whodunit and as a finely tuned character study of a strong but insecure woman trying to prove herself in a man's world.
