Following a successful album is never easy, no matter what the style of music. In hip-hop, the challenge is arguably more difficult since the whims of the genre are constantly shifting, the sounds ever-evolving. On their second full length album, Power In Numbers, Jurassic 5 prove up to the task of answering one remarkable album--their first, Quality Control--with another. Nobody could really doubt the result. The Los Angeles-based outfit has always displayed a blazing ingenuity and inventiveness in their craft, earning the four MCs and two DJs of the group a loyal, dedicated following that reaches throughout the world.

"The signature wordplay and musical ingenuity are as strong as ever here..."  James Donaghy, Playlouder
"...their second album will thrill fans..."  Peter Relic, Rolling Stone
"Oozing confidence, clarity and common sense, the group's four MCs tackle their topics...like the greats of old"  Dan Leroy, Launch.com

The chorus of "What's Golden," the first single from rap collective Jurassic 5's second record POWER IN NUMBERS, talks of going "back to the days of yes y'allin" and "holding on to what's golden." "A Day at the Races" features shout-outs to Kool G Rap and Kool Moe Dee while Big Daddy Kane guest raps. This gives a hint of merely one side of a band that embraces and embodoes the old school while infusing it with bits of all that's come since. J5 contains four DJs and two MCs, and the many cooks, far from spoiling the Jurassic stew, allow for many different perspectives and the fullest of sounds.
On their 2000 debut QUALITY CONTROL, J5 had to contend with over five years of expectations fueled by touring and heightened by a hailed 1997 EP, yet released a solid, if not earthshaking record. With POWER IN NUMBERS, the hip-hop sextet hits its stride, both lyrically and musically. The four starkly different voices layer richly textured stories, piling one on top of the other, dissolving into a mosaic, an MC battle revealing another piece of the ongoing story of life.

As spiritual as Talib Kweli, as musically complex as Mos Def, as joyfully syncopated as the Roots, Power in Numbers sets the standard for intelligent hip hop. Listen to it early. Listen to it often. You'll get more out of it every time. - Jennifer Kelley

Bio
Jurassic 5's roots lie in the L.A. Underground, a hip-hop movement centered around The Good Life CafŽ open-mic space in the heart of South Central Los Angeles' old jazz district, where dozens of MCs and DJs would congregate regularly to perform. During its most prolific period (1991-1994), the L.A. Underground was a Mecca of musical innovation, spawning groups like The Pharcyde and Freestyle Fellowship; more importantly, the movement encouraged its artists to constantly balance progressive styles and good music--an idea that still resonates with J5, the most successful group to emerge from that scene. Jurassic 5 formed in 1993 as the union between two separate hip-hop groups, Rebels of Rhythm and Unity Committee, both frequent participants at The Good Life. The two groups came together to release a spontaneous, one-off single, "Unified Rebelution," which made a deep impression with true hip-hop heads everywhere. Its success emphasized the chemistry each of the artists had with one another and they decided to form Jurassic 5 as a singular musical unit. The rest is well documented. Their self-titled EP was released in 1997 on the group's own independent imprint, selling tens of thousands of copies around the world. Signed to Interscope Records shortly thereafter, with a re-release of their EP, J5 found themselves mentioned in the same breath as groups like The Roots, De La Soul, Mos Def and Talib Kweli--artists who served as an important and welcomed counterpoint to the prevailing standards of hip-hop music.

5 of 5 HipHop Near Perfection Wednesday, October 30, 2002
Tim from Chapel Hill, NC
If you only bought one album this year, and were forced to listen to that one CD every single day, you would still be excited by each track on Jurassic 5's sophomore release, Power in Numbers. Two years since their first full length album, Quality Control, the J5 crew has evolved their sound into something more mature, more intricate, and more intelligent, but has lost nothing in the process. Song highlights on the CD include "Thin Line," featuring Nelly Furtado, a song exploring the intricacies of friendship and relationships, "Freedom," where Chali 2Na and Akil explore the meaning of the word in a range of circumstances, and "What's Golden," reminiscent of earlier J5 and oldschool in general, a great hiphop anthem. Producers Nu-mark and Cut Chemist once again contribute a superb example of instrumental turntablism, "Acetate Prophets," to close the album. I strongly encourage anyone and everyone to go out and buy this album! Whether you are into the underground scene or gangsta rap or don't even listen to hiphop, you will still not be disapointed.

Heidi from Minneapolis
This is an amazing album, I love all of j5's stuff, but this just took it to another level. Old skool hip hip with crazy beats and catchy lyrics. You will find songs that you refuse to take off repeat, it will be addicting and you will get this album stuck in your head. After all that you will be bragging to everyone about this album you have. Lucky you! Enjoy!!

5 of 5 Jurassic 5 Strikes Again Monday, October 28, 2002
Evan from Winchester MA
I counted down the days to Power In Numbers and on that fateful tueday that it came out me and my boys were jumping out of our seats in our last period spanish class. When the bell rang we headed for our cars and b-lined it to newbury comics and grabbed the last 4 copies of the day. as we listened on the way home we were blown away, it was better than we ever thought. The beats are tight and the rhymes are fresh, all thats expected from the boys at J5. Cut Chemist and Nu Mark do some amazing work and of course the boys marc 7, chali 2na, soup and zaakir were tighter than ever. PiN is a step up from quality control and a must have for any hip hop fan.

5 of 5 J5 Finds A Way To Remain Supreme... Saturday, October 26, 2002
Paul Springs (psprings from Chicago, IL
It was said that Jurassic 5 couldn't possibly match the heights they had previously reached on their EP and first full-length album "Quality Control." However, once again, they have proven themselves to be at the forefront of their genre as well as the strongest bastion of old-school hip hop in the industry. This latest release from the J5 crew and friends has covered all the bases of hip hop, from back-in-the-day style speed rap with Big Daddy Kane and Percy P on "A Day At the Races" to an unexpected, masterful blending of styles with Nelly Furtado on "Thin Line." Fans of the industry will enjoy a guest freestyle by Kool Keith on the impressive "DDT," and an appearance from the Beatnuts' JuJu on "One Of Them." As always, die hard hip hoppers like myself can look forward to the dynamic breaks and beats laid down by DJs Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark on such stunning tracks as "Break," "React," "Acetate Prophets," and the album single "What's Golden." As Jurass fans have come to expect, the album embodies the crew's signature vibes of universal positivity and good time block-party-style rhythms carried off by the superbly practiced lyrical styles and vocal harmony of the four horsemen. Get a free limited edition J5 DVD with the album while supplies last and pick up your tickets for the "Power In Numbers" tour as soon as possible. I already have!

5 of 5 Coming Correct!!!! Thursday, October 24, 2002
John Voorheis from Ypsilanti, MI
Proving that independent Hip-hop can be commercially successful, Jurassic 5 adds another great set of songs to their impressive catalog. The lead single "What's Golden" is sure to be one of the more memorable party tracks of the fall, sporting delightfully a sleazy synth line over only the best boom-bap, courtesy of resident dj/producers Nu-mark and Cut Chemist. Over all, a great album, true to the tradition of all elements of hip-hop while taking their art to new levels.

5 of 5 Power in Numbers - a power to be reckoned with. Thursday, October 24, 2002
Steve from Seattle WA
J5 – Pounding out the rhythm, Cutting up mixes and serving it all up with tight style! I was never a huge fan of rap music. That began to change a few years ago when I happened in to the Central Tavern one night here in Seattle. It was a small crowd that night, a hand full of people really. I hadn’t come for the music that night but what was being served to this small crowd quickly had me engaged. 4 MC’s & 2 DJ’s were on stage working the room with full heart and love of their craft, despite the size of their captivated audience. Wow, the boys had skill! It opened my eyes to a style of music that before I had no interest in. Some time after that first awakening I bought “Quality Control”. The skillful mix of rhythm and harmony once again took me aback. Now fully hooked, I began to see Hip-Hop and Rap in a new light. It’s not the style of music. It’s the soul and skill of the artist that counts. J5 is leading the way for me in discovery of a new world of music. Power In Numbers is brilliant! Once again the perfect mix of harmony, heart, beats and mixes. They lose none of their edge and step up to a new level of skill with ease. Every track on this disk makes me want to move. I can’t help it! They deliver every line with a confident ease. There is a strong feeling of respect for a deep-rooted history that propels them forward, breaking new ground. This is by far one of the best disks I have purchased this year. I truly believe they deserve all the praise and support they get. Buy it. You won’t regret it.

5 of 5 More classic material from J5 Thursday, October 24, 2002
straight_outta_hampton from Hampton, NH
J5 always comes with the fresh original sound and Power In Numbers is no exception. Each lyricist (Marc 7, Akil, Chali 2na, Soup) will leave you mesmorized with their lyrical skills and original styles. That added together with the beats that Nu-Mark and Cut-Chemist drop on this album and you've got one dope ass album, which is exactly what this is. You should check this CD out even if your not a fan of hip hop, I have a feeling it will change your mind, and if you are a fan of hip hop...then what the hell is taking you so long, go get that ish!

omg, J5 is insane. long-time listeners will feel at home with their highly anticipated newely released album Power In Numbers. Those who heard Quality Control will realize that J5 has only been improving on their abilities and keeping the listeners hooked. New listeners will immedialtely gain a love and respect for this band who goes against the current mainstream hip hop trends, and like most underground bands, keeps it real. Highly recommended.

5 of 5 Amazing new Album from J5 Thursday, October 24, 2002
Tom from rochester, NY
This CD is unreal. J5 unleashes new sounds ans tepped up skills for this album. Each track is strong. The second track "freedom" sets the mellow but powerful tone for the rest of the album. The title track "what's goldne" is rocking, it takes you back to the old school, and gets you rapping right along with the boys. This is a must have for anyone that appreciates music in its pure form.
