I have three young boys (almost 8, and twins at 6) and two of them are heavily into Pokemon (the oldest primarily video games, the six-year-old into Pokemon figures and situational game playing). This set gives the "beginning" of the Pokemon series and sets up the viewer for the development of the characters. Yes, it's a cartoon (or video anime, if you prefer) but it does teach a lot about character and perseverence in a fun way -- probably more oriented towards boys originally, it has grown up to encompass girls also to a considerable degree. Fun, sometimes endearing, and rarely scary.
