4 of 5 2nd Thoughts Tuesday, June 12, 2007 scanmann from Kailua, Hawaii
The cheaper unit has a slower scan rate and the software is not as packed. No Cmyk, a lite version if you will. I was hoping for a higher Dmax than 3.4, but truely after 100 scans only 9 were a problem. The software can be setup to accurately prescan and autoset Tonal values as well as cast adjustments for kodachome and fuji, etc. Other software have a mask choice for these type built in. Perhaps Silverfast can use linocolor as an example on the extreme use of Tonal,Luminosity, and contrast adjustments. This would allow the 3.4 Dmax to be adjusted upwards tremendously. The software is intuitive, but I would suggest tweaking each manually for the best result. A few hours of experimenting will get you well inside the ballpark. I am using the other software (linocolor)to further enhance the scans. Speed is awesome with the 7200I scanner. As in most software beware of interpolating sizes. The best results will ALWAYS be with low magnification in the beginning and higher scan DPI. It gives the software more info in which to make the unsharp masks or whatever filters you prefer much more usable. The slide carriers are robust and easily utilized. I am a professional drum scanner operator, with a 48" epson 10000 printer and I still am impressed with the results. Whether you need the CMYK version or not the middle cost unit is even a better cost value. But I am not complaining. I may still need to find another scanner for my darker, more muted slides, (9%) but this scanner for the most part is much better than I had hoped for! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 For the money...WOW!! Monday, June 11, 2007 scanmann from kailua, Hawaii
I have been a 20,000DPI drum scanner operator for 20 years. I have been searching high and low for a quality scanner. For the cost, this has turned out to be one hell of a scanner! Kodachrome, Fuji Velvia, Astia, Ektachrome is no problem with the cast removal software function. Once you play with it the software you get an intuitive feel for it. A 7200 DPI 48 bit Lab file takes 15 min for the max quality setting, dust removal and such. Software installs easily, both Mac and PC. The low 3.4 D_max of the scanner has proven to be a problem 5 times out of 100. The Tonal expansion tool helps a great deal. The 48bit lab file gives me the ability to further enhance the file. The only serious Con is the one scan at a time, slide the next frame into place, etc, etc. But the speed allows me to ready my next set before the first strip of 4 is complete. The negative function is easier yet. The SRD function works fairly well. Serious scratches still need help later. A good quality cleaner still is the scanner operators best friend. Nothing scans better than a clean slide!! The minolta, Canon scanners may be better D-max! but the speed of the USB, and the ease of use and 7200DPI for under 400.00 new? No joy, buy the plustek!
