    4 of 5 Less than expected but still pretty good Wednesday, February 08, 2006

    I purchased a 716-A based on its great reviews but have had too many problems to give it a great review myself. The first unit I purchased could not read several of my music and program CDs and its performance became progressively worse, so I exchanged it. The new unit performs better, but I am still unable to read several music CDs in my collection. (Ironcially, my cheap HP drive and my generic laptop drive have no trouble reading them.) For the impatient, the 716-A takes longer than other drives to read a disc. Other than these problems, the 716-A is quiet and burns good DVDs/Cds > 90% of the time. Plextor support on-line and via phone is very good. A great drive? No, but 4 out of 5 isn't bad.

    4 of 5 Good drive when it worked Tuesday, February 07, 2006

    I bought this drive for the reputation of its maker (the same Japanese company that makes TDK brand). It was performing well. I only had to buy another package to burn CDs and DVDs, the package supplied was not as good as Nero suite I bought for it. About 9 month later, drive stopped working: it would not burn or read any disk. The Windows and BIOS would still recognise it as PX-716A DVD-RW. Plextor has good utilities to check the drive and mine was found to be defective. I am returning it and as soon as the process is finished, I will post an update. So far I can say, it is a good value, software bundle may be insufficient for the serious users, dealing with Plextor was easy - email is anwered within several hours and the staff is polite and knowledgeable.

    Great stuff, I didn't even have to read the user manual to set it up, half an hour later, 2 dvd were already burnt, it came with the whole set of software that one might need, worth the price...

    This drive is flawless, yes you pay a bit more for it but it is worth every cent. Never created a coaster with it and the speed for backing up a system to DVD+RW was 12 minutes for 2.24GB including verify. Don't waste your time or money on any other DVD-RW drive

    In researching this drive, I called Primera, which makes CD duplicating machinces. They use Pioneer drives and just recently have started using the Plextor 716A in their duplicating machines and have had excellent results. Plextor and Primera recommend using Taiyo Uden and Verbatim media. You can check the Plextor website for more info on other recommended media.

    I have owned 2 HP DVD burners. I never had a sucessful burn on any DVD. That was when discs were more expensive to buy . This Plextor burner has never missed a burn. I love it.

    I must say that this this Plextor 716A is just a perfect machine. I have been using Plextor for some time always with no problem. One may argue that there are cheaper dvd writers on the market from other brands, but certainly Plextor can compete (if not win) with many of them. The things I liked besides speed, double layer and +/- : -very quiet drive-you just don't hear it. Even tray opens super quietly. -Professional Tools software by Plextor included with the drive: excellent. Overall I am very pleased I have bought it. Thank you buy.com for exceptional service. It is a pleasure doing bussiness wth you guys.

    This drive does dual layer discs at 4X. The above specs are incorrect. I've burned about 80 dics so far and did not have any errors yet. Awsome drive!!!
