Planet Earth (BBC) - The Complete Series - DVD
By: Michael Jones - Blogcritics.org Reviews
Published on: 4/30/2007 10:15 PM
How does one even begin to lay down the words that would even dare to try to encompass and review the DVD boxset of the BBC’s nature documentary/mini-series Planet Earth, and not instantly feel insignificant and otherwise insufficient for the task? Bearing in mind that the overall cost of production was around $25 million and that filming occurred over the span of 62 countries, 204 individual locations, all over a period of five years, perhaps such feelings are not altogether unwarranted. ...read the full review

DVD Verdict 10 of 10
Simply put, Planet Earth is the new gold standard in nature documentaries. Produced by Alastair Fothergill and the BBC's Natural History Unit as a follow-up to their universally lauded oceanographic series, The Blue Planet, this 11-part examination of the majestic beauty of Earth's remotest landscapes and rarest species is guaranteed to take your breath away. The show offers a whirlwind tour of the planet, sweeping viewers in grand aerial shots from artic tundra to craggy mountains to surging deserts to rainforests and oceans teeming with life. Along the way we get a brand new glimpse of the life-and-death struggle unfolding daily in the wilds of our globe...Like all nature series, each episode of Planet Earth draws its dramatic intensity from the relentless struggle between life and death--and the show is, indeed, dramatically intense. Placid shots of achingly beautiful flora, fauna, and sprawling landscapes are juxtaposed against the never-ending contest between predator and prey. Planet Earth is absolutely riveting, but not for the feint of heart...It is the astounding breadth, scope, and depth of Planet Earth that makes it revolutionary. - Dan Mancini

4 of 5 Dog Eat Dog Wednesday, May 13, 2009
Bob from Andover, MN

The scenery is exemplary. Every section, however, starts out showing a fluffy, cute animal and then ominous music sets the stage for it being eaten by something bigger and faster. I know how Nature works, I even eat something cute and fluffy now and again. I just don't find watching this played out over and over real enjoyable. I actually enjoy the segment on the filming as much or more than the actual footage. This series is like Wild Kingdom for the 21st Century.

A Viewer from Coppell, TX
My family and I could not stop watching until we watched all episodes even though we had watched some of it on Discovery channel. Especially my 7 yr old son, who wanted to own this in the first place, was so excited about this that he now has watched these dvd's multiple times. Great shots, the content and the views are just superb. Way to go BBC!!!

5 of 5 great DVD Monday, August 06, 2007
Charles from Falls Church, VA
We saw part of this series on Discovery channel, and wanted to get all the disks. Originally we ordered the HD version, but then realized would have to buy an expensive DVD player, and that the formats of the future are not that clear. We think the series is incredible good and highly recommend them for all ages.

5 of 5 FABULOUS DVD COLLECTION FOR AN UNBELIEVABLE PRICE! Friday, July 06, 2007
rlevoydvm from La Verne, California
I'm a veterinarian in small animal/exotic pet practice. For the past 4 years I've been searching for DVD's to show my clients while they're waiting in my reception area before their office call appointment. I've tried vet. med.-oriented dvd's and other nature-oriented dvd's with variable success. I can honestly say that this dvd set has been the best received by my clients by far--very entertaining and educational. Even my staff is drawn to watching them (and they aren't easily attracted to reception room dvd's). I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this set to anyone who appreciates our planetary home. Just the GREATEST!!!

Kat from Central City, CO
Best DVD I've purchased in a year. Anyone who enjoys scenery, animals, exploring, hiking, etc, will enjoy this DVD series. The places they explore are not usually seen by the average person and the shots they get are amazing. A truely inspiring look at the place we call home. A great gift!!
