Given the immense success of the first film in 2003, the inevitable Pirates of the Caribbean sequel received an $80 million boost to its budget. The film definitely looks the part. Both immense in scale and fun, Dead Man’s Chest is easily on par with, if not better than, its predecessor.

Depp is in peak form again, burying himself in the part and making the Captain the most dashing rogue this side of Han Solo...In essence, Dead Man's Chest gives us an opportunity to join old friends on a new adventure that isn't substantially different from the old one. Many of the same elements are here - ghost ships, the walking dead, hidden treasure - and that's all right because it's part of what we might now refer to as the "Pirates of the Caribbean formula." The slow, uneven beginning is more than compensated for by the rousing climax, and the last scene promises more of the same the next time around, with possibly greater things to come. - James Berardinelli

As brisk, busy and inconsequential as you would expect from a film based on a Disneyland ride -- and a sequel at that -- "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" is pure cinematic junk food...Mounted with all the color of a costume ball and directed like a "Raiders of the Lost Ark"-styled swashbuckler free-for-all, it follows a video-game logic to reunite all the cast members and send them bouncing around the Caribbean in another scavenger hunt, escaping one scrape after another by the skin of their scurvy teeth...Verbinski, Depp and company just want to make it the best ride you've had all summer. - Sean Axmaker
