From producer Jerry Bruckheimer comes Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the thrilling, high-seas adventure with a mysterious twist. The roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp) idyllic pirate life capsizes after his nemesis, the wily Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), steals his ship, the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the governor's beautiful daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley). In a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl, Elizabeth's childhood friend Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) joins forces with Jack. What Will doesn't know is that a cursed treasure has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead. Rich in suspense-filled adventure, sword-clashing action, mystery, humor, unforgettable characters, and never-before-seen special effects, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a must-have epic on the grandest scale ever.

Editor's Note

Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse.

Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, swift swordplay, and even wittier wordplay. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Depp) plenty of room to cut loose. Although the skeletal pirates may be a bit frightening for small children, there's lots of humor to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL a nearly flawless fun film.

James Berardinelli's ReelViews 7 of 10
Pirates of the Caribbean is good, but not great. Swashbuckling adventures are few and far between these days, so it's a pleasant surprise to see one that is competently made. To add to the enjoyment, the movie never takes itself too seriously. If there wasn't so much action, it would be tempting to classify the production as a comedy. Alas, Pirates of the Caribbean runs for a good 30 minutes too long (the protracted battles with the undead, who cannot be killed, become repetitive), and the denouement is on the weak side. Taken as a whole, however, the movie represents solid fun. - James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
There's a nice little 90-minute B movie trapped inside the 143 minutes of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," a movie that charms the audience and then outstays its welcome. Although the ending leaves open the possibility of a sequel, the movie feels like it already includes the sequel; maybe that explains the double-barreled title. It's a good thing that Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp are on hand to jack up the acting department. Their characters, two world-class goofballs, keep us interested even during entirely pointless swordfights...Capt. Sparrow's behavior is so rococo that other members of the cast actually comment on it. And yet because it is consistent and because you can never catch Depp making fun of the character, it rises to a kind of cockamamie sincerity. - Roger Ebert

ReelViews 8 of 10
For those taking a global view of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, it's very easy to be cynical. This is, after all, cross-promotion at its most blatant. What could be more marketable that one of Disney's most popular theme park attractions? The name recognition is already in place - all that's necessary to complete the puzzle is a story that will fit the ride. But there are two reasons why jaded ranting isn't the best way to proceed with this review. In the first place, no one really cares. And, more importantly, this is actually an entertaining experience...Pirates of the Caribbean is wall-to-wall battles, chases, and fights. The only pauses are those necessitated by the need to advance the plot through exposition. There's lots of swordplay, including a lengthy and memorable struggle between Sparrow and Will. It's probably the best example of cinematic swordfighting since The Mask of Zorro. - James Berardinelli

5 of 5 Exciting Swashbuckler Tuesday, October 03, 2006
John Parrow from Key West, FL

Johnny Depp has definitely found his niche. All cast members are superb and just the right actors for this fast moving film. The special effects are out of sight. You are totally immersed from beginnng to end. And the plot twists are intense. I can't wait to see the sequel. I highly recommend this movie.

5 of 5 A movie I could watch over and over Thursday, August 04, 2005
A Viewer from Blue Point, NY
For me, the best part of the movie was the musical score, broad, sweeping and fits the action in the movie perfectly. Johnny Depp is excellent as is the cinematography. Watch it with a good sound system at a decent volume, you won't be sorry.

5 of 5 Captain Jack Sparrow shines. Friday, January 09, 2004
Gayle from Meadville, PA
Johnny Depp's role, as Ct. Jack Sparrow, is one of his best yet. It's neat what happens to the crew. I'd LOVE to tell you, but that would ruin the movie for you. It's a spectacular movie, a must see. My kid's, ranging from 9 to 14, love the movie so much that they want to see it all the time.

2 of 5 So much hype for so little return...... Friday, December 05, 2003
A Viewer from Pittsburgh, PA
Not much to say about this yawner. Maybe 2 chuckles thanks to the running gag. The thin plot left me bored. Johnny Depp's performance was a distraction, which is unusual for him. This one's going straight to the used video store.

5 of 5 Pirate's Recieves The Booty!!! Saturday, November 29, 2003
Kat Parry: yohopirate13 from Irvine,CA
An unbelievable acting job on account of Johnny Depp, as the furtile Captain Jack Sparrow. The overall plot is smart and to think that this was inspired by the ride you have to give Disney their props. The special effects are phenomonal and the stunts, and battle scences arrr spectacular. The over all rating for this movies gets *****. But if Mr. Depp was not in this movie let me tell you that it would not have been good. The ships are beautiful and scenery in the historic Caribbean. Johnny brings laughs charm and inspration to find that pirate inside yourself I highly reccomend, or command that you see this wonderful movie. P.S Johnny Depp oscar nomination for best actror for this movie.
