I was using Studio8 on my PC satisfactoraly except for occasional crashes. I have an Athlon XP 1600+/512MB/80GB HDD/64MB Video. Studio8 ran without much trouble on my system. I just bought Studio9 and installed on the same system (after uninstalling Studo8).
- The installation process was buggy. The HD had 42GB of free space. Yet the installation CD said that it didn't have enough free space. I had to select the custom install setting, uncheck the "samples" module and then the installation worked. I then re-installed the dropped module.
- It reported problems installing the automatic music creation files and dropped about 8 of the 25 to be installed.
- A bonus DVD came with the package and it took almost an hour to install about 3GB of bonus features. Afterwards, I learned that I had to pay extra to use the installed "bonus features". I could have saved an hour of my time they were decent enough to state this in the installation instructions.
- Studio9 itself is much much slower than Studio8. With no other process running (other than required system stuff) it still uses a lot of disk swapping to run a project that Studio8 ran without any trouble.
- The program window occupies the whole desktop. This is annoying as I run 1600x1200 to be able to view more than one application at a time.
- The few Hollywood FX transitions that were free with Studio8 are no longer free on Studio9. None of the standard title pages on studio8 are available on Studio9 either. This broke the project I had started and worked half way through.
There are some new features that were not available on Studio8:
- Supposedly Studio9 has automatic gamma correction and automatic fixing of shaky video. I didn't need to use these and have no opinion on them
- Video capture supports some extra capture formats. I only use capture from DV and the WinTV card. Again no opinion.
- Studio9 supports dual layer DVD's. This is an improvement over Studio8. Also improved is the ability to better control the volume in the sound tracks.
My system may be too slow for Studio9. The only fix I can think is to spend $250 and upgrade the processor and RAM. This is too much to spend as I see more negatives than positives over Studio8. Overall, I'm disapointed with Studio9 for its slower speed, resource hogging, the stupid extras DVD and other features that require you to pay extra to use. I started with Studio7, upgraded to Studio8 and was very happy with the product. I was expecting the same improvement in moving up to Studio9 and didn't find it too pleasing. So I'm re-installing Studi8. Was this review helpful?

I have owned Studio 9 for about 6 months and it is very easy to edit analog or digital home video clips. Adding titles and sound is very simple as well. Was this review helpful?
