2 of 5 It has been Bought, Weighed and tried. not too sat Tuesday, March 18, 2008 A Customer from Staten Island, New York
For its price it seems like an awesome deal... I bought 4 of em and placed them all over my house... out of the 4 only one works so called flawlessly... The other three system was defective. the laser jumps and so during movie viewing you would get an occassional flicker in the screen...
The disappointed thing was the DVD player has no memory function. I view alot of movies here and there and sometimes i watch long episodes too. But from time to time i have to cut a movie short. I like to power down my system and when i return power it back up press play and go back to where i left off. The player does not offer this function. A very big thing for me and pretty sure a big thing for a few of regular consumers too. other than that its a good DVD player. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 You just can't go wrong! Monday, March 10, 2008 A Customer from NY
This DVD is very simple, easy to use and the cheapest one that I could find for its characteristics.
It doesn't have the sleakest design (although it is not ugly), and its remote control has a cheap look, but hey - who cares! For under $50 you get a player that recognizes all formats, incl DIVx and MPEG 2.
There is no "Open/Close" option from remote control - the button is on the DVD unit itself.
This is the second time I buy this particular DVD. First time I bought it about a year ago but it stopped working - it would not detect the disk. I give it a score of 4 out of 5 for this reason - I don't have a confidence that it will last for a long time, but with the blu ray technology taking over the market, I doubt I'd need it for more than another year. 5 of 5 Very satisfied Monday, January 28, 2008 Terry from Cherokee, NC
This unit arrived quickly from Buy.com, even with basic shipping. The DVD player surpassed my expectations by playing videos directly from a data dvd, as opposed to writing a video dvd, which could take hours. I only wish it had an S-video output. Also, the progressive scan feature would not work with my progressive scan tv. Overall, the video quality is excellent, the remote is easy to use and it was simple to setup. Great buy for the price! 2 of 5 Not a multi-region player Saturday, January 19, 2008 Sergey from Minneapolis
If you're looking for a truely multi-region DVD player which not only is compatible with both PAL and NTSC, but also plays DVDs from all reagions (1-6), this one is NOT the one you would want to buy. I got deluded with its description. My unit does not play a lot of region 5 movies, yet it plays some... so its performance is quite inconsistent, and Phillips tech service was helpless in this issue. I don't recommend this player to people like me who need to watch movies outside of region 1.
In othe respects, it's an OK player. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Plays well and is well worth the money Thursday, January 10, 2008 Albertus from New York, NY
This player works quite well. It can play PAL as well as NTSC. It is certainly worth the money. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great player for great value Friday, December 21, 2007 A Customer from Omaha, NE
Quite a light and compact little unit, and the setup was easy. I've had it for three weeks now, with no problems so far; playback has been excellent for both NTSC and PAL discs (even old and damaged discs have played with minimal glitches). It's basically everything I've been looking for in a new DVD player.

While the price was comparable to other lines, and the sleek styling is attractive, something tells me that some Japanese engineer must not have been paying attention during the design team meeting, as this is the only DVD player with a remote that has no "EJECT" or "OPEN/CLOSE" button which leaves the user to do it manually at the machine. This one oversight on the part of Phillips desingers leaves me looking at other brands in the future. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Great buy if not for the remote. Thursday, November 29, 2007 karsce from Phoenix, AZ
This is a great player for the money. Plays all formats mentioned without a hitch. It is also thin and compact.
The only reason I am giving this a 4 star is the remote. It has to be the worst possible design ever. First the shape and layout of the button are not intuitive and I always end up holding the remote the wrong way. ON top of that it doesn't have the basic buttons to slow or fast forward movies which is very disappointing.

4 of 5 Fits the Bill Sunday, November 11, 2007 Kathy from Kansas City, Missouri
Our old dvd player would not play some of the new dvd's so we decided it was time to get a new one. This slim dvd player fit the bill and the price was right. Was this review helpful?

I love this player also, but have found a few undocumented features that make it more usable.
To eject a disc, press and hold the "stop" button.
Less tricky for closing the disc drawer is to press the "play" button.
There is only a skip forward and reverse button and it is documented to press and hold these buttons to make the player run fast forward or reverse. This is cumbersome and if you slip, instead of fast forwarding, you will skip to the next chapter or track which is painful.
A better and simpler way to fast forward or fast backwards is to use the left and right circular curved buttons surrounding the "ok" button.
I hope this helps for anyone using the remote control for this unit. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Would buy it again. Monday, October 01, 2007 A Customer from Herreid, SD
I am very happy with this dvd player. The slim design is great to look at and it fits anywhere in my entertainment center. It was a good buy and a great deal in my mind. Was this review helpful?

Very nice slim DVD unit. No problems out of the box. Excellent unit for the spare tv or even the primary one. With free shipping and no tax from Buy.com, hard to beat the value. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Nice multisystem player Tuesday, September 25, 2007 Stan from New York, NY
This player is very thin with just a few buttons on it. All functions are on remote control. The quality of picture is very good. I had Aiwa DVD player before and realized how bad sometimes the picture was when I compared to this Philips unit. The most attractive feature here is the possibility to play NTSC and PAL without the use of any video converter with your NTSC TV set. That is just great fot the well-known European brand under $50! Pros: Plays everything from scratched up DVDs to dvix. Remote control has good sensitivity. Includes all wires and even batteries. Very slim and stylish. Probably does even more, but I only know and use the most basic stuff.
Cons: Missing fast forward, rewind, and eject button on remote. No S-Video. I can live w/o the S-Video, but I really need the fast forward button. Btw, the skip track button is there and if you are technical enough you can go into the setup screen skip around. Was this review helpful?

My headline notes the only weak point I found with this product, that;s why I gave it a 4 in "overall satisfaction" instead of a 5. It has played absolutely everything I've thrown at it, computer burned music, mp3's, computer burned DVD video, if it's in DVD or CD media format + - whatever, it will play it. Play everthing ( all kind of disks I have); Easy to make it region free to play disks from other contries; becareful that this item does not have S-video and optical audio; the remove control is not that good -- you have to point to the DVD player. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Incredible product for the price Monday, August 13, 2007 A Customer from Philadelphia, PA
Great successor to the DVP-642. I couldn't be more pleased. It plays all my AVI's as well as my high-res AVI's. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Non-HD DVD Player Sunday, August 12, 2007 tweek from Fairfax, VA
Thanks to the reviews online, I purchased this player for all of my international DVD's. And practically all of my video formats, avi and divx work perfectly, can easily be played on this device. For the price, this was a no-brainer as a purchase. The DVD setup isn't anything fancy, but it is perfect for a simple player. If you are in the market for a nice looking dvd player for all of your various video formats, and you don't want to spend a lot for a HD player, this is the best choice on the market. Went to the local mega store after my old sony stoped recognizing disks and picked up the unit. I wanted something inexpensive cause the wife was away and I didn't want to be in trouble when she got back:-( After looking at all the brands available, I said "give me the Phillips". This is one fantastic unit! I was watching a movie last night that started to freeze and I thought oh no! After removing the movie and inspecting it, I found that one of my little ones must have been handling my DVDs again because there was a huge smudge mark on the DVD that was probably jelly or similar. The movie played flawlessly for about an hour before the trouble. My old sony wouldn't have played this dirty DVD at all- I'm convinced. True it doesn't have S-Video but it does have component and composite, with component being better than S-Video:
http://lyberty.com/encyc/articles/svideo.html
The only slight drawbacks for me are that the battery door cover on the remote is a bit loose- I put tape over it to prevent loss. And also, the unit slides on my furniture a bit when I push any buttons on the unit probably due to its low weight. Neither of these minor issues could lower my value or satisfaction scores. Oh yeah, it's progressive scan too. I thought that this might be a good second unit when I bought it, but after trying it out now for a few weeks- It is a fine primary DVD player as well. 5 of 5 Good, cheap and plays it all Thursday, May 24, 2007 Junex from Dallas
good product. It played everything so far... reads easily all formats. pretty happy Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent unit Monday, May 14, 2007 A Customer from Fair Lawn, NJ
This DVD player does everything expected of it. I can play standard store bought DVDs as well as DVDs burned on the computer and most importantly for me, I can play AVI, MPG and Divx movie/multimedia files that are burned to VCD, SVCD or DVD. Excellent unit especially for the low price. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Nice simple DVD player Monday, May 14, 2007 A Customer from Beaumont, TX
The DVD player is thin, and has a nice cosmetic appearance, markedly different from the usual boxy units. The picture is nice, the remote well designed, and hook-up simple. There are 2 audio (right/left) RCA and one video RCA connector, and an audio optical digital out. This one-DVD player is a great value for the price (<$50). It would be perfect if it had an S-video out, and an eject button on the remote. I'd still buy another one. Was this review helpful?

Just a comment on Buy.com low price guarantie - a couple of days after I received DVD player price on it dropped and when I call to customer service they told me that I have only three days since the day of the purchase to make a claim. Very, very strange...

5 of 5 great DVD player especially for the price Tuesday, April 17, 2007 thewavecave@comcast.net from Redwood City, CA
I was looking for an inexpensive DVD player to replace an older DVD that was starting to not read disks, skip, etc. I ordered this one and was impressed with the ease of adding it to my Audio/Video system. It reads every DVD I've thrown at it, from commercially bought ones, burned copies, to home-made ones. Overall a great value. Was this review helpful?
