5 of 5 Happiness is a Philips television .... Sunday, May 17, 2009 jrk from Santa Cruz, CA
Bought our Philips August 2008. Our first problem was that it kept turning itself on and off. In November 2008, a Philips technician advised us of the software update which we downloaded from their web site onto a flash drive. We then plugged the drive into the side of the T.V. and voila ... no more turning on and off. Then, we experienced the television programs "popping" in and out of different formats. Philips immediately recommended a service center in our area ... which turned out to be out of business. After three months of drama, Philips finally suggested another person some distance away. This guy came out on a Sunday, took one look at the television and diagnosed the problem ... our picture format was set to "Automatic" and, according to him, needed to be in "Wide Screen" mode (despite the fact that the instructions and all the Philips techs told us to be sure the format was set to "Automatic"). Our picture is now "picture perfect" and all is well. Was this review helpful?

I bought my Philips 47" back in 12/2007 as a Xmas gift to myself!! The TV is awesome, the picture is incredible and the ambilight is mind-blowing!!! Wii and Xbox360 games on it are great!! I love my Philips LCD!! Thank you Buy.com for having it on sale alot cheaper then any other place I could find it!! In order to get the best possible picture on the TV, I do recommend playing with the settings, out of box they are less then optimal. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 Thinking of buying a Philips? Please read. Thursday, March 12, 2009 Stew from Las Vegas, NV
So I began this frustrating journey a year ago, after purchasing a Philips 47" LCD TV (model: 47PFL5432D/37) from my local Las Vegas Costco. The problems however, did not pop up until two months ago.
Now, before I proceed any further, allow me to explain the 3 problems I am currently having with this unit. I am going to be using a phrase "halfway turns on" more than once through the next few paragraphs and I want to be absolutely clear on what that means. When the unit "halfway turns on", I mean the following:
1. The unit's power supply/transformer/whatever audibly clicks twice. This is the same noise the unit makes when it is powered on normally. (ie. "ca-click" )
2. The blue LED in the corner does NOT illuminate. For all intents and purposes, the unit appears to be off. However,
3. If the power button is pressed on either the side of the television, or the remote (does not matter which method is used), the LCD backlight INSTANTLY turns on, illuminating the screen, as well as the blue LED turns on. This to me indicates that when the unit "clicks" as described in #1 above, that the TV is turned on and drawing power from the the electrical outlet. There is no power-on self test. There is no few seconds of dark and then the TV illuminates, as when it is powered on normally. Again, the screen and blue power LED illuminate INSTANTLY after the either power button is pressed a second time.
Now, the three separate problems I am experiencing with the unit:
Problem #1
The television "halfway turns on" randomly, at any time. Nothing has touched the remote. No one has pressed the power button on the side of the unit. It just "halfway turns on". I cannot recreate this problem, as it does it whenever it feels like it.
Problem #2
When trying to start the television, by pressing either the power button on the remote, or by pressing the power button on the side of the unit, the television does not respond. Repeated presses of the power button (either one) yield nothing. Then, roughly 20 seconds later, the unit power cycles itself. What I mean by this, is that the unit audibly turns off, then right back on. (ie. ca-click, Ca-Click! off, then on) After a few seconds, the unit's LCD backlight illuminates and the TV works normally. I cannot recreate this problem, as again, it is completely random, but it is happening at a rate of about 5% of the time.
Problem #3
When the unit's clock is programmed, so that it displays the correct time for my region (PST), the unit will automatically "halfway turn on" every morning at 5 am, every day. Initially, I kept waking up at 5am with no idea what was waking me up. After a few mornings of this, I was able to isolate it to the television. Since I work in the IT field, I began to troubleshoot the TV to the best of my ability. Power cycling it, leaving it unplugged overnight, flashing the firmware, etc, etc. And much to the chagrin of every support person I've spoken to (7 now and counting), I've shown them that there is no time set in the 'On Timer' portion of the menu.
By the time I had identified these three problems, my warranty had just expired with Philips by 5 days. So Costco, rather than having the TV serviced under their warranty, contacts Philips to see if they will still cover it under their initial warranty. Phillips agrees and issues a repair order to my local authorized Philips service center. They come out, initially diagnose the problem, take the TV, and I am told, replaced the mainboard. Within two minutes of them returning the TV, I am able to recreate the problem, showing them that it still has a problem. I then call back Costco, and am elevated to a "Presidential Liason" at Philips. After sending a lengthy email describing the problems I have experienced thus far, I get the following reply:

Mr. (omitted),
I copied your to our product specialist. Apparently we're not understanding that this is a normal function of the unit can in fact be turned off if you wish not to use the clock feature. I myself was not aware of this. Our product specialist had this to say:
"When the TV "wakes up" at 5:00, the TV is performing a background channel scan to check for new channels and for ones that have moved to another channel location (this is possible with digital channels). This is per design intent of the TV. The TV clock controls when this occurs, and by putting the clock into the manual mode and clearing the time, the TV will not wake up to do this channel scan. That what I was trying to have the customer do, however, I suspect that the time did not clear. It may be possible to put the TV clock into the manual mode, then unplug the TV for a long time (an hour), then plug it back in. That may clear the time and stop the wake up at 5:00. Again, if the time is not cleared, this background channel scan feature will still operate. If the customer wants to use the clock feature of the TV, there is no way to prevent the wake up. The choice is live without the TV clock, or live with the noise when the TV wakes up.
Note: replacing this customer's TV will not resolve the issue, because all of the TVs have a clock feature."
It would appear the "turning half on" is the background scan if I am following the specialist and this is supposed to occur.

Re: Timer Issues/Philips Presidential #7KQQ9Link
Sure I can live without the clock. But then I begin to sacrifice other functionality, like being able to actually use the On Timer functionality, as well as any other functionality that is based off the internal clock. And the real kicker? The TV is able to update its firmware (by downloading a .bin file from Philips onto a flash drive), allowing you to flash it and resolve any issues in relation to its software. But the engineers, and Philips, would rather take the stance of "Sorry, tough luck!" and "Not our problem," rather than fix what is an obvious flaw. Why can't the television do this housekeeping procedure after it has been turned on? Why have to do it at 5am? And for the record, Philips never made any attempts to address the other two problems listed above.
After contacting Costco regarding the issue, they stated that they would be unable to offer any help or replacement as "this isn't a problem; the television is operating under designed specs."
So do yourself a favor, and avoid purchasing any Philips brand flat panel televisions, as per their engineers, EVERY television is going to have a clock feature and I would have to assume until told differently, set to turn on at 5am. And as my case has shown you, Philips doesn't give a damn about fixing their own products. Thought everyone would like to know, so they can avoid a costly mistake. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Best TV ever Tuesday, March 03, 2009 Fergie from New York

5 of 5 Best Bang for Your Buck!!! Sunday, February 10, 2008 The Phreak Show from Washington, DC
The process of buying a flat panel (LCD TV) was a long one for me. I am not usually one who searches for the bells and whistles but that's what my search boiled down to. Philips really put together a masterpiece when it comes to this TV. To me it has the best picture compared to TV's in its class and price range. It also holds its weight against more expensive and more tech. advanced TV's. Summary: Very Happy Consumer!!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Just awesome! Monday, January 28, 2008 A Customer from Streamwood, IL
This HDTV is essentially flawless. The image is crisp clear and amazing, it works perfectly with the PC too.
We own it for about a month now, and it is great, the only thing that could be better about this TV is the remote, some functions are a bit too time consuming to get to. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The Perfect TV Set Thursday, January 24, 2008 fergiecat2004 from New York
First of all, buy.com has the best price found online and in stores, no shipping cost or taxes, thus worth purchasing a TV set from this great store. Second of all, and after searching for two months, I discovered that Philips had created an outstanding TV where the picture quality was almost perfect when HD channels were selected, and the sound was better when compared to other sets such as Sharp, Panasocic, etc. If you are still searching for the perfect TV, this is it: Philips USA 47PFL7432D 47" Widescreen 1080p HDTV LCD TV with Perfect Pixel HD and Ambilight 2 Channel - 47PFL7432D/37
The ambilight 2 channel is a plus, I truly love this TV set.

5 of 5 Dazzling Monday, January 14, 2008 Dean from San Jose, CA
After shopping for about 6 months, looking both in stores for visual quality and online for prices and reviews, I finally settled on a Philips. When this one went on sale, I bought it immediately. It was shipped promptly and installed easily. It's a bit heavy and requires two people to move, but that's to be expected from a 47" LCD. This unit has no unevenness in lighting or pixel anomalies.
The picture quality has been wonderful, both in SD and in HD. Our living room is not large, and we sit about 10-12 feet away, and the picture is impressive from that distance. Any closer and we would notice pixels too easily, but it can be enjoyed from twice that distance also.
The ambilight works well, but takes a bit of getting used to since it's a new technology. Configuration is pretty much automatic, and setup took about 15 minutes once everything was plugged in, though channel search can take a while longer. The remote is basic and easy to use by feel, with the all-important mute button in a natural place for your thumb.
I'm certain I'll be happy with this purchase for years to come. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Wow Friday, January 11, 2008 John from Austin, TX
I'm a techie (dual 24" LCD's on my development machine), but have been holding for an HDTV. I saw this deal and could not pass it up. This is an amazing tv. I couldn't live without Ambilight now, it is awesome. I'm only using half of the connections. And the user interface is super easy. My 3 year old can change input sources to the Wii. 5 of 5 This TV is amazing! Wednesday, January 09, 2008 Tom from Levittown PA.
After researching HDTV's at all major retailers I decided on this Phillips 47" LCD. Buy.com had this TV for $400 less than local stores and with Buy.com I got a free shipping offer and no tax. What a deal.
The picture is amazing and I love the ambilight and USB features. I keep the ambilight on a blue color when not watching a movie for a high tech look. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 WOW Philips 47PFL7432D Tuesday, January 08, 2008 A Customer from Houston, TX
After a little of 6+ months searching I was looking for a 42inch. but I figured wth get a 47inch. This TV is BIG! Excellent resolution and quality. Ambilight is 2 (two) lights in the back of the TV that you can turn on instead of the light switch in the room. (Now I now what is is!) Ordered the tv on 12/21 (sale) got a call from the airport asking when they can deliver it I said what about now, they said NO (wasn't to happy about that), got it on Monday installed it last night (01/08/08). Excellent TV for the price, but remember it's BIG! I may need to attach it onto the wall, looking for a mount now. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Simply Awesome Tuesday, January 01, 2008 Dennis from Illinois
I reviewed and researched before finally deciding on this set. The only problem is I wish I would have decided on this earlier. The picture is awesome! Setup was clear following their step by step instructions. I didn't buy the set for the Ambilight function but now that I have it I love it. Very cool TV. Compared to the the Sharp Aquos I already had this TV is better. Was this review helpful?
3 of 3 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Philips 47PFL7432D is incredible Thursday, November 22, 2007 Anthony from New York N.Y.
All I can say that after a few months of searching I decided to buy the Philips 47PFL7432D and I am so glad that I did. The overall quality is incredible. From the incredible 1080p picture (awesome), to the high gloss black frame and all the features in between I am thrilled with my decison. The ambilight feature is a great bonus, not only does it help with the viewing experience, but is also looks great when your wall lights up matching the picture being watched. I love the way Philips designed connections for HDMI on the botom of the set which allows easy access to them without removing the set from the wall. Great design idea! You will be impressed as I am.
