Be impressed with this Philips DVD player with HDMI digital video and audio connection. Step into another home entertainment arena as you immerse yourself with High Definition video (720p / 1080i/1080p).

HDMI digital output for easy connection with only one cable

  • HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio. By eliminating the conversion to analog signals it delivers perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with (Digital Video Interface) DVI.

12-bit/108MHz video processing for sharp, natural images

  • 12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.

192kHz/24 bit audio DAC enhances analogue sound input

  • 192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.

High definition JPEG playback for images in true resolution

  • High definition JPEG playback lets you view your pictures on your television in resolutions as high as two megapixels. Now you can view your digital pictures in absolute clarity, without loss of quality or detail - and share them with friends and family in the comfort of your living room.

Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality

  • Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

    5 of 5 Great DVD, DivX Up-Converter Wednesday, March 25, 2009
    A Customer from Atlanta, GA

This is an awesome little player that up-converts DVD's as well as DivX and Xvid files. The picture quality is incredible on my 720p 42" plasma. I can only imagine how it would look on a 1080p! The USB on the front is great for those DivX, mp3, etc. Great value for the money and I would definitely recommend to anyone.

    5 of 5 TOTALLY GREAT! Sunday, March 01, 2009
    CbIHO4EK from Baltimore, MD
What a great improvement 5990 is to its predecessor 5982. It loads waaaaay faster, stays on when not in use so there's no need to look for a place where you stopped watching your movie. And I just LOVE the new remote!!! It's stylish and works so much quicker than the old one. Unfortunately, 5990 would not play movies stored on my Maxtor portable HD for some reason, but I would definitely recommend this player.

5 of 5 Delivers as promised Saturday, February 21, 2009
Cuyler Griffith from Des Plaines, IL
Very satisfied with this purchase. My main goal was to transfer TV shows I recorded on my computer DVR over to a USB stick and play them thru the DVD player's USB port. Everything worked just as advertised. I did discover something that may be useful to others and that is the FF and REW function. Skipping thru commercials with FF works just fine. But overshoot the start of the next segment and the REW function varies by USB brand. My primary USB stick is a PNY 4gb version which does FF very well but REW is almost not functioning. It will REW but painfully slow. I tried out a SanDisk stick and it did the REW in a normal fashion. Don't know if all PNY sticks would do this or if this just unique to this particular stick. Another tip, the player would not play videos stored on my portable WD External HDD for some reason, but it does play videos on an SD card connected to my SD->USB card adapter.

Waiting on blu ray... decided to go with up convert and see the difference. There is a slight viewing upgrade. So far so good, I have not tried all the options yet but what I have used works good. For the price you cant beat it.

    5 of 5 Great Product Tuesday, February 10, 2009
A Customer from New York NY
Awesome product, can play almost any file out there with the exception of MKV. It can read big flash drives and even hard drives (I connected a 1 TB one, and it worked, but obviously took some time to read all the files on it). The only way for it to work with it to have Fat32 installed on your hard drive. You will not be able to connect regular hard drive to this DVD player. Otherwise a great product, especially for this price.

    5 of 5 Good Value Sunday, February 08, 2009
    Allan from Rockville, MD
I was looking for an upconverting player to improve the appearance of SD videos on an HDTV. I didn't want to spend a lot because Blue-Ray may become more affordable within 1-2 years, so this is just a gap filler. I was pleased with the ease of set-up and the quality of the output. The small size was also a surprise; very compact and portable! I've only been able to look at jpeg pictures from a flash drive (I usually have only wmv or QuickTime clips, no avi), but they show up nicely, once you've figured out the navigation.

    5 of 5 Great Player Tuesday, February 03, 2009
    Wayne from Andalusia Illinois
I am a big fan of reading the reviews of a product before purchasing it.Everything this player says it can play is true as far as I can tell. The main reason I wanted it was to play AVI files from a flash drive. The only thing you can't do is to use a large capacity flash drive. I really like this player.

    5 of 5 Great divx/xvid/etc/dvd player Saturday, January 24, 2009
    Greg from Chicago, IL
I love this thing, it's been great. It plays everything under the sun perfectly in the couple of months I've owned it so far. My only gripe would be that the file browser only shows a small amount of characters for each file name so similarly named items may be hard to tell between unless renamed. Playing off a usb stick is very nice as well, this is a great player.

    5 of 5 Awsome Product Thursday, January 22, 2009
    David from Spartanburg, South Carolina
I've had this about a month now with no issues at all, plays anything you can think of including xvid, Pal, Ntsc, and about anything you can think of. The upscaling is great, does what its supposed to do and great picture, i paid $5 for my hdmi cables btw, so dont waste your money on $80 hdmi cables. USB port works great with newer flash drives and external drives, it wouldnt work for a couple of my 5 year old drives. It also has tons and tons of extra featuers you can customize to your needs, and has 32x ff and rw speeds on dvd's and great slow motion and pause features. The only thing that someone may not like is that the load times takes a few seconds, id say from 30 seconds to 60 seconds, depending on the disc, but that dosent bother me at all and its only with some disc, not all of them. Overall this is a great product, i cant see how anyone could go wrong with this one. :-)

5 of 5 Great Player, Well Worth The Price Sunday, December 21, 2008
    Charles N. from Sacramento CA
I have had this DVD player for over a month now, and I must say that I am very impressed! PROS: * Easy Setup * Upconversion delivers great video quality/audio decompression (do note that you must have a TV that can support HD and an HDMI cable to use the upconverting feature.) * Smooth playback of video/audio files from USB drives * (This one is for the techies) All sorts of great audio/video settings that you can tweak to your liking" CONS: *The user interface for the setup menu isn't as user friendly as one would like (In my opinion it's not too big of a deal, but others might have some trouble navigating through the settings) *The firmware that runs the player is a bit buggy, for example: when you put a previously viewed DVD back into the drive, the player will attempt to resume from where it last stopped. At times this feature can cause the DVD player to freeze up (this happens rarely). However there is a setting that will allow the DVD player to simply start from the beginning of the DVD so that problem can be easily taken care of. Overall this is an excellent DVD player with great features at a great price

4 of 5 Great Player, Well Worth the Price Saturday, December 20, 2008
    A Customer from Sacramento, CA
I have had this DVD player for about a month now and I am very impressed. The audio/video quality of the upconversion is great, and so is the ability to play DIVX files via USB drives. (Due note that you must have an HDMI cable and a TV that supports HDMI to upconvert DVD's to Hi-Def) PROS: *Easy Setup *Sharp picture quality and uncompressed sound when using HMDI *Easy to use file browser for USB *Smooth playback of video and audio files from USB *(This one is for the techies) The ability to convert audio files to mp3 from within the player CONS: *The setup menu is a bit finicky/not as user friendly as one might like (I really don't mind since it's a small price to pay for a great DVD player, but some might disagree) *The firmware that runs the DVD player has some issues such as: *When you insert a previously played DVD, the player will attempt to resume from the last spot, and sometimes this feature will cause the player to freeze up (the setting for resuming DVD's from the last place can be easily switched off so it isn't a huge deal.) Overall this is a great player and I highly recomend it for the quality/price

5 of 5 Plays AVI from Flash Drive! Monday, December 15, 2008
    Zach from Madison, WI
All I really needed was some type of upconvert dvd player for my HDTV. I saw this model with the USB port and I had to try it. I just got it in the mail today and found out that it can play avi files from my flash drive! Because of this, I think that this dvd player is an awesome deal. Like I said, I just got it, so I don't have anything to say about the quality or how long it lasts. I have read that the HDMI port tends to burn out on this model, but it's covered under the one year warranty so I'm cool.

5 of 5 Great DVD Player Saturday, November 29, 2008
James L. from north babylon, NY
I've only had this dvd player for a short time, but I have played all different kinds of media in it and have yet to come across something it won't play. picture quality is great through the HDMI cable hookup. Does not come with HDMI cable, but I bought a 4 pack of 6ft cables from Cables Unlimited right here on Buy.com for $45 and change, and they worked just as well as the one cable I paid $50 for. Would recommend this to anyone.

5 of 5 Bridge to Blu Ray Sunday, November 16, 2008
    Bill from Clearwater, FL
After researching the solution to input my conventional DVDs and avoid the expense of a BR DVD player, I got a great deal on this player to combine with my new 1080p HDTV. It's a snap to set up (remember to buy a HDMI cable if you don't have one) and produces great video. Recommend without reservations.
