5 of 5 No zoom when shooting video. Friday, September 25, 2009
Roger from Phillipsburg, NJ

This camera is STILL an outstanding value. You can trust a name like Pentax to make fine equipment. My shots come out so clear it's amazing. My only disappointment is that the zoom does NOT work when shooting video, unlike my Olympus which does. Most digital cameras now use rechargable batteries that are unique to each model. This one is no different. It does use SD memory which is a plus. Comes with a wall charger and data cable. I use a card reader. My Olympus uses their XD memory chip for storage. Supported by some card readers, but not all. So, you may find the SD cards this camera uses more convenient. Don't pass up this deal!

4 of 5 Incredible Deal !! then needed Warrany Repair Saturday, June 13, 2009
Repeat Pentax Customer from Seattle WA
This was an INCREDIBLE price from Buy.com at $105 and sold out in a matter of hours. In fact given past experiences with Buy.com I assumed that my order would not be processed as it was sold out but somehow I got Buy.com to complete my order. Much to my surprise 6 days later it shipped! Fedex left it on a Saturday at a my business that was closed in plain site (luckily I checked the tracking and picked it up that night off the door step). I have the older s40 that eats 2 AA's, the A40 has much better battery life due to the slim lithium battery. The camera lense would not retract after a month and I had to ship it to Pentax in CO for repair. They have a link on their web site. You have to call them after you send it in for login info if you want to track the repair status. Otherwise they just fix it and ship it back with no communication. I have read other people having warranty repair denied due to cosmetic damage indicating that the customer might have dropped it. Mine was scratch free as being less than 30 days old. I think it took 4 weeks for repair. They replaced the motor unit that moves the lense in and out. I have had it for a week now and am still happy with the camera despite the required repair. I am no camera genius so I can only compare it to the S40 which was a tank and is still running after 4 years. The A40 has much better battery power and shots multiple photos faster. Hopefully it will last as long as the s40.

5 of 5 great little cam Sunday, May 10, 2009
jeremy from philly PA
this is a sweet little cam for 100 bucks. Good size. It isnt as successful at auto-focusing as my panasonic lumix but what do you expect for 100 bucks. I also wish the lens was better protected when the unit is off as a camera this size tends to get thrown in your pocket.

5 of 5 returned camera is fine Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Ramsey Campbell from Eustis, Fl
Although I had to return this camera to Pentax as soon as i opened the box, I got it back a week later and it was picture perfect. Still pictures are amazing and videos are absolutely stunning, I didn't expect it to be this good or so easy to use

This is a great camera! I was not sure about it at first because I was not familiar with the brand name but after reading reviews it looked like a good deal. After trying it I was more impressed as it has excellent picture quality, zoom, and cycles quickly. Not to mention the fantastic price!

5 of 5 Great Camera for the money Sunday, April 19, 2009
Michael G from Jacksonville, FL
Takes wonderful pictures - doesn't autofocus as well as some of the extremely high end cameras, but still good. - 12 megapixels for the price is fantastic. This gives great high resolution and with the addition of virtually any image enhancing software (e.g. adobe photoshop, or even some of the built in windows products that come with most pcs) you can make any picture look great.

5 of 5 Great Camera! Even better for the money Thursday, April 09, 2009
James from Columbus, Ohio
My first digital camera was a pentax Optio S5i, which I still use to this day. The S5I was so reliable, and took such good pictures that when I saw this deal online I had to buy the camera, and I haven't been disappointed yet. I wish they made an underwater case for it, but it has great functions built in and allows the user maximum shoot-ability. I would recommend this camera to anyone it is a great buy. I also have a Canon G9, but it is to large to carry around for the night on the town or just around the city, so for me it was essentially an upgrade of my S5i. I would consider myself a Semi-Pro, due to my avid photography both on land and below water. Hope this was helpful. I would actually make one last note, and that is I typically recommend the Canon Elph series to most people but after using the the Pentax A40, im not so sure anymore since it really is a great camera for $40-50, less.

A Customer from st louis , mo
I like this camera,. It takes great pictures, works a bit different than the Kodak, but then that was expected. I do like the color, the zoom is great. It is a complete package, Camera, battery, charger. But you will need to buy the chip/ memory to insert to put your pics on.

5 of 5 Great value and nice little camera. Tuesday, April 07, 2009
Mark from Orange Co., CA
I already had a compact digital camera (9mp) but with the price and it having 12mp, I decided to buy it. I sure am happy I made this purchase. I thought my other camera was small, but this one is half the size. It is perfect for putting in your pocket and having the ability to shoot pictures anytime without having to mess with clumsy camera bags. The picture quality is fantastic. Even my camera buff cousin couldn't believe how good the pictures came out. This was a great product at a great price. Highly recommended....

5 of 5 awesome buy Tuesday, April 07, 2009
A Customer from Bloomington, Illinois
I bought mine for my own birthday treat and to replace as well my old 7MP canon and boy oh boy, i am more than impressed with what it can do to me! I super love everything about it-- from the very sharp images t the ease of use not to mention the cheap price I paid for. I am very proud to now own a pentax! And even prouder to own one that's made in my own country-- Philippines! I would totally recommend it!!!

5 of 5 Great little camera Tuesday, April 07, 2009
Richard from Boulder, Colorado
I just tuck this camera into a pocket and go. I've been amazed by the quality of shots I've been able to get on just the automatic mode. Camera turns on very quickly: boom, ready to go. Likewise shuts down quickly, which makes it very easy to capture photos with little notice. Software works seamlessly with my laptop, so downloading pics is a breeze. I'm still learning my way around the Modes and Functions which will take me awhile, but overall this is a fantastic little unit for a sweet price.

5 of 5 Picture Perfect Pentax Tuesday, April 07, 2009
A Customer from Austin, TX
I bought a Canon Powershot camera the day before this went on sale. I immediately ordered this camera and received it the NEXT DAY! It is head-and-shoulders better than the Canon. The pictures are sharp, the autofocus works quickly and accurately, and battery life is reasonable. I particularly like the myriad adjustments that are possible, including selection of the picture resolution -- low for pictures to be posted to the web, and high for pictures to share and to print in large format. The camera can also be "set and forget" for those who neither need nor want the adjustability. After closely comparing the cameras, I returned the Canon to the store. This Pentax is a high-powered bargain. Get it if you can!

5 of 5 Nice little camera Tuesday, April 07, 2009
A Customer from Finksburg, MD
This is a nice camera with lots of possibilities. You will need to buy a memory card because it doesn't come with one and the internal memory only holds five pictures when set at the best resolution. The cards are very inexpensive though, and an 8 Gb card will hold more than a thousand pictures at the highest resolution.

5 of 5 Great product but sometimes slow... Saturday, April 04, 2009
A Customer from Rockford, IL
I haven't had the chance to print out any pics from this camera yet, but the pic quality seems great. The only problem we've had is the speed of taking pics. Sometimes it works immediately and other times it pauses a few secs to catch its breath!

5 of 5 Good camera Wednesday, March 04, 2009
Mark from Wilmington, DE
I bought the camera based on reputation and price and size. Very small, take anywhere. The camera takes excellent pictures indoor and outdoor under normal circumstances. Still working on indoor in dark environment like kids school plays, basketball games. Using Auto settings so just need to learn more. Most pics excellent. Got an 8gb SD card. Whats most impressive is recycle time of camera. Just keep pressing the button, it keeps taking. FAST FAST FAST. Replaces multiple cameras. This is all the camera 99% of the people need.

5 of 5 Great camera at a great price Monday, February 23, 2009
Pat from Calais, ME
This is my first digital camera. I have used many of other peoples and I knew I wanted something that wasn't going to require a degree to figure out how to use. This camera is simple to use "if I figured it out then so can you" I tend not to read user manuals and haven't opened the one that came with this one yet but have found all the functions. It's sleek compact design makes it easy to bring with you without a bunch of bulky gear weighing you down and with the 8gb SD memory card I bought with it I can take over 1,500 high quality pics or 10,000 pics on the lowest res setting. I haven't had this camera very long but I'm not the least bit disapointed in the purchase.

5 of 5 LOVE THIS CAMERA!!! Sunday, February 22, 2009
A Customer from McDonough, GA
I bought this camera after I broken the LCD screen on my Kodak ES 7mp camera. This is a wonderful camera. It takes great pictures and come with everything you need. The manual is a little intimidating at first with its 211 pages but is easy to follow. You will not be disappointed when purchasing this camera. The Price can't be beat.

4 of 5 Best value for Gigapan panoramas Wednesday, February 18, 2009
Graham Toal from Edinburg, Texas
The high pixel count, low cost, and small size make this a really good camera to use with the Gigapan panorama robot. Setup is a little fiddly and focus can be a little soft if you're not careful, but with a bit of work it pays off. Very good value for money at the time of writing. Couldn't find anything in this pixel range for less than twice what this cost. (And although usually raw pixel count isn't the overriding factor, for Gigapan panoramas it certainly is :-) )

5 of 5 Outstanding value Monday, February 16, 2009
Bill Malloy from Spokane WA
The Pentax Optio A40 at $119 is a high quality camera at a very affordable price. I bought an earlier model - the Optio S, about five years ago - for about twice what I paid for this new version, and have gotten great performance from it. The improvements in the A40 at such a low price make it well worth having two cameras, even though the old one is still working fine. The rapid-fire continuous shooting mode is far faster than the Optio S. The 2.5-inch LCD monitor is much larger than on the Optio S. However, this apparently required eliminating the optical viewfinder, a feature that I liked about the older version. It is slightly larger than the Optio S, which fits snugly inside an Altoids box. Those last two minor drawbacks do not dampen my enthusiasm for this camera at all. I highly recommend the Pentax Optio A40 at this price to anyone looking for a great deal.

4 of 5 Excellent pocket camera, but some limitations Monday, February 16, 2009
Thomas Fowler from Washington, DC
I bought this camera because I've found that pocket digital cameras are extremely handy on vacation trips, and this one offers a very high ISO speed for dim light pictures, which I often want to take inside old churches, buildings, etc. The camera works flawlessly. I did compare it to a Norcent pocket digital camera that I purchased from Buy.com a year ago, and also with my Canon Power Shot IS. Outside in bright light, the Pentax outperforms both. But in dim light, both it and the Norcent suffer from a loss of resolution compared to the Canon. I think the problem is that the very small lenses in these cameras cannot deliver high resolution when used at widest aperture. Whether that is a limitation of current lens technology or just diffration limits being hit, I do not know. Otherwise this is a very nice camera and you will be pleased. Auto color balance is fairly good, and the layout of the controls and the user interface (menus, etc.) is noticeably improved over that of the other two cameras. The "Green" button on the camera converts it essentially to a point-and-shoot, handy for non-photographer types like my wife. All in all, a good deal!
